Following another round of compliance checks on tobacco retailers in Belvidere, none of the 23 inspected were to be in violation of laws regarding the sale of tobacco to minors.
The Belvidere Police Department in association with the Boone County Health Department conduct these tests using trained youths 15-17 along with undercover police officers.
Any businesses found to be selling tobacco to youths is cited and given a fine of $200 for “selling or furnishing tobacco products to minors.”
These compliance checks are also used as educational tools to businesses as a reminder to always verify ages before selling tobacco or alcohol to customers.
