Travel Like an Architect: Balance adventure with relaxation on vacation

If you “Travel Like an Architect” you will make the most of your visits to the places you travel to. We find the best vacation is one that balances adventure with relaxation. A cruise vacation has a unique way of offering both.

Adventure takes many shapes. For us, it can be climbing the walls of a Spanish fort, whitewater rafting down a raging river or a hike up the slippery path of a rainforest mountain. Less physically demanding, can be a bicycle or scooter ride down a coastal road. Or a brisk walk to a nearby beach. For the physically active, adventure can be flying down a zip line or snorkeling an underwater marine sanctuary.

We find a day of adventure leaves us feeling mentally exhilarated yet physically tired. While fun and exciting, too many days of adventure leaves us feeling exhausted rather than refreshed. We have even found that we get less out of an adventure when we are not rested and refreshed. Hence the need to balance with quality relaxation.

When blueprinting a vacation we recommend choosing a cruise with an adequate number of “sea days”in between adventures.  On these days the boat is just moving from one exciting port to another. We use this time to enjoy the ship’s pools, spa, fitness center, educational seminars and sunny deck chairs. We have also learned to discipline ourselves and not treat every port as an adventure. Some destinations we deliberately plan to relax. We may spend the day laying on the beach and lounging in the ocean. Or we may sit in a plaza, enjoy a street side café and simply take in the people and culture of the location.

Balancing adventure with relaxation provides the most enriching vacation experience, and will return you to work refreshed, and keep you wanting more.
