Staff Report

The Rockford Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that the North 3rd Street bridge connecting to Whitman Street will be closed from March 19 due to structural deterioration.

In a statement from City Engineer Matthew Vitner, DPW says the bridge will be shut down indefinitely and “there are no current plans to repair this structure as the Department investigates the best design solutions for this location.”

Following a regular state inspection last April which resulted in a maximum vehicle weight restriction being placed on the bridge the city has conducted special inspections every three months.

According to the DPW statement, “The latest inspection report revealed the bridge conditions to be very poor and accelerating to the point of becoming a public safety risk.”

A detour across using Jefferson and Main Streets will be signed before the closure. North 6th Street which passes under the bridge will remain open to traffic.
