The planned closure of the 3rd Street bridge connecting to westbound Whitman Street began today.
City Engineer Matt Vitner said via statement that the bridge conditions had deteriorated “to the point of becoming a public safety rick.”
Damage to the deck, spans and support structure were deemed so advanced after an April inspection that quarterly reviews were ordered. The Department of Public Works announced March 6 that the bridge would close following an inspection. No plans are currently in motion to reopen the roadway.
A detour route via Jefferson Street and North Main Street has been signed. North 6th Street, which passes under the 3rd Street bridge, will remain open.
