Winnebago County will no longer require senior citizens to renew their Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption.
This decision will save many seniors the inconvenience of having to deliver the form in person or mailing it back to the county.
Tax payers will also benefit by saving $6,000 in postage and printing costs.
Forms are available on the Winnebago County website and the Assessor’s Office, 404 Elm St., for first-time exemption applicants.
Only senior citizens who qualified for the Senior Freeze in 2014 are being sent applications for the Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption (Senior Freeze).
Senior citizens will be familiar with the blue sheets used for renewals before 2013.
There will be no more blue renewal forms in 2015.
Seniors who receive the Senior Freeze application and know their total household income has gone over $55,000 will not need to return the Senior Freeze application in order to continue to qualify for the Over 65 Homestead Exemption.
Senior citizens should know that if the Over 65 Exemption shows up on their tax bill they will receive the exemption again next year as long as they still live in and own their home.
