In the Harlem School District 122, voters may choose between the following candidates for their school board:

Incumbent President of the Board Heather Kelley, 42, a Machesney Park resident, and employed as a principal of V2 Marketing Communications in Rockford. She has a reputation as a fair person who puts the students first. She is a vote for openness and stability. Vote for Kelley.

Incumbent Vice-President of the Board Larry Barger Jr., 45, a Machesney Park resident, and employed as a sale representative at Accurate Metals Illinois in Rockford. He has a great skill set for the athletic department, and supports students. Harlem sports need him and his commitment to them. Vote for Barger.

Incumbent Board Secretary George Russell, 63, of Loves Park is a financial services officer for Crosby Law Firm and American Law Firm. Indicative of right-wing micromanagement, his lack of support of the superintendent and rest of the board is of concern. Personnel investigations are the primary responsibility of the superintendent’s office and all such inquiries should to be directed to the superintendent. A board member conducting an independent investigation is inappropriate without letting normal procedures take their course. Thoughtful, with good training, Russell means well but has the wrong moves. His aspirations for a higher office are well known and perhaps he should pursue them.

Challenger Robert Lockwood, 44, a resident of Machesney Park, and employed as  the owner of P.C. Tech 2U. As as a former employee in the transportation department of the district, his agenda is questionable. His passion is admirable but may not be primary to education.

Challenger Jeffery Starnes, 43, a  Machesney Park resident, and employed as a network specialist at Ingersoll Machine Tools. Doing his homework in preparing for this race, he really does have the best interests of the students, education and a good relationship with the teachers at heart, with no alternate political or personal agendas. The board does need new spirit, with an honest,  level head. Vote for Starnes.

For the Board of Harlem School District 122 vote for Heather Kelley, Larry Barger Jr. and newcomer Jeffery Starnes.
