The Beloit Snappers, in conjunction with their major league affiliate the Oakland Athletics, announced the Opening Day Roster for the 2015 season.
The Snappers’ Opening Day roster is highlighted by five players that are on the Oakland A’s Top 30 Prospects list according to milb.com: RHP Heath Fillmyer, RHP Daniel Gossett, RHP Brett Graves, RHP Jordan Schwartz, and INF Yairo Munoz.
There will also be some familiar faces on the diamond to start off the season. There are a total of five players that are coming back to Beloit who played here in 2013 or 2014: RHP Trevor Bayless, RHP Junior Mendez, C Jose Chavez, INF Melvin Mercedes, and OF Brett Vertigan.
Snappers Manager Fran Riordan begins his first season as a minor league manager. Riordan has spent 14 years managing in independent leagues including the last four seasons at the helm of Florence in the Frontier League. He guided the Freedom to a 190-194 record over that stretch. Riordan is a member of the Frontier League Hall of Fame.
He will be joined in the dugout by hitting coach Lloyd Turner, pitching coach Steve Connelly, athletic trainer Brian Thorson, and strength and conditioning coach J.D. Howell. Turner and Howell are entering their second season in Beloit as Thorson is entering his third.
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and are a Class A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. The Snappers start off the season on the road as they face the Clinton Lumberkings for three games and then they go to Cedar Rapids to play the Kernels for three games before returning to Beloit.
Opening Day at Pohlman Field, 2301 Skyline Dr., Beloit, is set for April 15 at 6:30 pm when the Snappers face the Quad Cities River Bandits.
