YMCA opens apps for Intern Challenge

From the YMCA of Rock River Valley

The YMCA is continuing the Intern Challenge – a six-week scholarship competition based on the popular television series The Apprentice – for a fourth year.

The Intern Challenge is open to area 16-25 year olds and features weekly elimination challenges with Rockford business and community partners designed to help contestants develop real-world skills that cannot be experienced in a classroom.

“We developed the Intern Challenge as a way to engage the next generation of employees,” says Mike Brown, CEO and President, YMCA of Rock River Valley. “High School and College students are able to engage with local organizations, become involved in the community and see what future careers are available to them.”

Contestants have the opportunity to be mentored by some of the area’s top business executives, while developing teamwork, leadership and professional skills in a fun and challenging environment.

The winning intern will receive a $1,000 college scholarship and a paid internship with the YMCA worth up to $5,000. For more information and to fill out an application, please visit ymcainternchallenge.com.

“What I enjoyed most about the Intern Challenge was that it gave me a chance to explore the Rockford area, provided me with a chance to gain valuable experience dealing with professionals in the workplace, and created life-long friendships I will cherish,” says Jeremy Kaszycki, 2014 Intern Challenge contestant.  “It was truly a unique summer and as much stress as it gave me, I don’t regret a single minute of it!”

The YMCA Intern Challenge kicks off on June 15th and the final elimination will take place in August. Audition dates for all contestants are Wednesday, May 13, 5:30pm at Rock Valley College Woodward Tech Center and Wednesday, May 20th, 5:30pm at Rock Valley College Student Center Atrium.

Sponsorships are now available and open to area businesses. The presenting sponsor for the 2015 Season is The Zenith Company. Other sponsors include Rockford Health System, BMO Harris Bank as well as the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford.
