Rockford City Engineer Matt Vitner this morning announced the closure of the South 1st Street bridge between Division and Grove Streets, approximately one block north of the Winnebago County Health Department.
The bridge is owned and maintained by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) who last repaired the structure in fall of 2014.
A recent Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) review of the structure deemed the repair work performed on the bridge unacceptable and ordered the roadway closed indefinitely.
The City along with IDOT have been in contact with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to encourage UP to repair the bridge to IDOT-approved standards but so far no steps have been taken.
“We will continue to work through IDOT, ICC and the UP railroad to determine a best course of action moving forward,” said Vitner.
The bridge will remain closed to vehicle traffic until further notice. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic is still allowed.
