The Rockford Aviators (4-0) claimed their fourth straight victory to start the 2015 Frontier League season by defeating the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-1 Tuesday night at Aviators Stadium in Loves Park.
Righthander Kyle Allen (1-0) pitched 6.1 innings of shutout ball to earn the victory while Tanner Witt, Teo Martinez and Devon Rodriguez each drove in runs to account for the Rockford offense. Michael Schaub pitched a scoreless ninth inning to register his first save of the season.
The first part of the game was a pitchers duel between Allen and righthander Kramer Champlin 1-0) who combined to keep the game scoreless heading into the fifth inning.
The Aviators finally broke through against Champlin with a pair of two out rbi singles from Witt and Martinez in the bottom of the fifth to forge into the lead.
The Beach Bums (2-2) eventually scored on a home run by Jose Vargas off of reliever Michael Frahm in the top of the eighth but the Aviators responded by scoring on a sac fly by Rodriguez in the bottom of the frame.
