From the Rockford Aviators
Five members of the first-place Rockford Aviators have been named to the Frontier League’s Mid-Season West Division All-Star team. Michael Hur, Devon Rodriguez, Tony Rizzotti, Kyle Brueggemann, and Kyle Hassna will all represent Rockford in the annual festivities in Schaumburg beginning July 13.
Hur, a veteran of the Frontier League who has been posting mind-boggling numbers at the plate while consistently racking up web gems in the field, was named an outfield starter in the game. Hur racked up four hits in the Aves’ Sunday night win in Traverse City to raise his average up to .359 and his OBP up to .445. He ranks in the top three in the league in both of those categories and leads all center fielders with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage and 106 putouts this season.
Devon Rodriguez, a first-year Aviator star, has also been putting up big numbers at the plate and in the field. The former Cal Golden Bear finished the Aviators’ most recent series against Traverse City having reached base six times in four games. His currently sports a .319 average with three homers and 21 RBI. He has registered 285 putouts this year while committing just one error at first base.
RHP Tony Rizzotti gets the nod to the all-star team after having one of the finest first halves for a starting pitcher in Rockford history. The Tulane alum has posted a 1.11 ERA over the course of nine starts. He leads all the league’s starters in earned run average and has posted a perfect 5-0 record to start the season. He was brilliant in game one in Traverse City this past weekend, going 7 2/3 innings while surrendering just one run and four hits.
Kyle Brueggemann has been terrific as well this season. The Olathe, Kansas native has put up a 2.98 ERA in eight starts and over 50 innings pitched. The third-year Aviator leads the team with a 1.05 WHIP and has lasted at least six innings in seven of his eight starts this year. Opponents are hitting just .215 off him this season.
Rounding out the Rockford selections is Kyle Hassna. Hassna, of Tracy, Texas, is the co-league leader in wins, securing his sixth victory of the year with a six-inning, one-run performance to secure the series for the Aviators in Traverse City. Hassna has an ERA of 2.39 and ranks second on the squad with 52.2 innings pitched.
The All-Star festivities will kick off in Schaumburg July 13, and the game will be played Wednesday, July 15. Managers and their coaching staffs, as well as general managers, broadcasters and local media members filled out ballots to determine the rosters of each team. Managers will be selected after play on Wednesday, with the managers of the first place teams in each division after play that night chosen to take the helms in Schaumburg. James Frisbee, manager of the West-leading Aviators, is in excellent position to earn the selection. His team takes on the Gateway Grizzlies starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday night at Aviators Stadium.
