The Rockford Aviators prevailed 6-5 in their series finale against Lake Erie Thursday when the team used a late-inning single from Anthony Renteria to down the Crushers for the third consecutive game.
The Aviators sent Payton Baskette to the hill to start and was tagged for a couple first inning runs, but Collin Shaw helped erase the deficit with a 2-RBI double in the second.
The Aviators would add three more on RBI singles by Brian Bistagne and Elijah Trail in the third to get out to a 5-2 lead.
The Crushers responded with three of their own in the third though to even the game at five.
Baskette calmed down afterward, holding down the Crushers for the next four innings before exiting after the seventh.
Anthony Renteria would prove the deciding factor in the eighth driving in Elijah Trail from second with a two-out base hit to make it 6-5.
Every run the Aviators scored in the game came with two outs.
Roberto Padilla and Patrick Dolan would combine to throw two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, and the Aviators got the sweep of the originally scheduled three game set.
The team now returns to Illinois for a three-game set at Normal that starts tonight at 6:35 p.m. with Kyle Hassna expected to start for the Aviators in the first game of the series against the CornBelters.
