Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department holds used motor oil, antifreeze and oil filter recycling event

Staff Report

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD), in cooperation with the Illinois Recovery Group (IRG) from Braceville, Illinois, will be conducting a used motor oil, antifreeze and oil filter recycling event on Saturday August 22 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The event will be held at the Ogle County Annex Building (Health, Zoning, and Solid Waste Departments) parking lot at 909 Pines Road in Oregon, one block west of Illinois Route 2.

Ogle County residents can bring in small containers of motor oil or antifreeze or up to 200 gallons in drums.

IRG will have a pump truck to evacuate motor oil from drums and small containers will be emptied of their contents on-site.

If you have more than 200 gallons of motor oil, contact the OCSWMD for information about arranging a pick-up.

Containers used to bring in motor oil or antifreeze will not be collected, these can be reused or thrown out with other trash.

These should not be recycled due to contaminants in the used oil.

Oil filters will be collected as well as this event.

IRG recycles the antifreeze and some of the motor oil which is collected, and some of the motor oil is used for a fuel source for buildings or construction projects.

The oil filters are drained and the metal is recycled.

Do not mix oil with paints, paint thinners or other vehicle fluids.

This contaminates the oil and renders it unusable, making it a hazardous waste which must be disposed of differently.

Oil mixed with other chemicals will not be accepted at this collection event.

It is important to handle waste such as oil or anti-freeze properly.

These materials can pollute our waterways and land if not properly managed, and can pose a health hazard to children and pets if they are stored on your property.

If you have used motor oil, filters or antifreeze bring them to the recycling event on August 22.

If you have any questions about this event, please call OCSWMD at 815-732-4020 or visit oglecounty.org.
