State representative Litesa Wallace along with Safe Kids Winnebago County will be hosting a free child car seat check on Sunday at St. Luke’s Missionary Baptist Church, 2919 19th St., at 12:30 p.m.
“There is nothing more important for parents than the safety of their own children,” Wallace said. “Unfortunately, I think a lot of parents sometimes do not realize that something as simple as a car seat can be the difference between being safe or injured.”
According to Safe Kids, a properly installed and used child car seat can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent. Despite this, it is estimated that 73 percent of car seats are not used correctly. Sunday’s event will give parents the opportunity to see if their equipment is safe and installed correctly. In addition to the car seat checks, the Rockford Police Department will also have a Citizens Assisting Police (CAP) representative on hand to take children’s fingerprints. The event is free and open to the community.
“It is my hope that parents take advantage of this opportunity to ensure the safety and well-being of their loved ones,” Wallace said. “As a parent, I recognize that having the peace of mind that a child is safe is crucially important for all families.”
