U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Congresswoman Cheri Bustos are asking Gov. Bruce Rauner to release funding for the Rockford International Airport.
The Associated Press reports the Democratic duo has asked the administration to release more than $16 million they say is due to the airport for a midfield renovation project.
Construction on the airport is already under way and Congress is looking to put money into the project. Durbin says those funds would be in jeopardy should the state decide to pull back their funding.
Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Jim Schultz responded to Bustos saying the airport has yet to show the state it has received the $10 million in federal funding it said it would have when applying for the state grant.
State Representative Esther Golar passes away
State Represatnive Esther Golar, a Democrat from Chicago, died Monday morning. She was 71.
Golar, a member of the House since 2005, was remember by Democrats and Republicans alike as a gracious yet determined voice for her community and for those who might otherwise not be heard in Springfield.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle described Golar as an honorable public servant and a selfless advocate.
Gov. Rauner called her “a pillar of strength in her community (who) represented the people of the 6th District with tenacity and grace. “
Golar was known to put strong beliefs into song and this spring did a rendition of “We Shall Not Be Moved” she’d adapted to show her displeasure with GOP proposals to limit collective bargaining.
Earlier this month, she left the hospital to cast her vote on a hotly contested override measure and, during that day’s session, went to a Springfield hospital for treatment before returning.
