Shooter at Crusader Clinic ‘contained’: RPD
UPDATE: Shooter in police custody
Rockford Police responded to reports of an active shooter at the Crusader Clinic Broadway location Monday afternoon. Police said that no injuries have occurred.
Several blocks were closed to traffic as a perimeter was established around the facility at 7th Street and Broadway. Local business owners were told to remain inside their buildings.
Reports indicated that a police negotiator has been brought to the location. Police confirmed that contact had been made with the shooter at an evening news briefing, though no reason was given for why he had come to the clinic.
The call for police response came from emergency personnel treating an unrelated patient near the facility.
Workers fleeing the building began calling out, “Man with a gun!” as EMTs treated a patient near the clinic.
Witnesses say that the shooter is not an employee of the clinic. Reports say that he entered the building, fired between two and five shots, and then told the building’s security personnel to exit.
Employees were told to take cover behind locked doors before being given the OK to evacuate.
RPD reports that all staff and patients have safely exited the building.
Police say that the shooter is contained and that only he and responding officers are left the facility. Streets near the clinic will remained closed as a precaution, police said.
Scanner traffic reported that a witness to the shooting was with police providing information on the incident, believed to have begun just before 2 p.m.
Police responded to the second floor of the clinic, which includes the building’s pediatric and family medicine areas.
Police have not released the suspects’s name at this time. The shooter, described as a white male in his 30s, asked to speak with a family member, which RPD are attempting to accommodate.
