Downtown businesses providing a variety of entertainment for First Friday

Many downtown businesses are taking part in First Friday this week with art, music and other activities.

Rockford Area Arts Council will be celebrating ArtScene with 40 Galleries and over 200 artists on Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 4-9 p.m. at various locations. For a complete listing visit

Irish Rose Saloon. 519 E. State St., will have The Element’s Singer/Songwriter Series featuring Marques Morel performing blues, folk & rock as well as artist Cari Ann Wayman’s exhibit “Dead and Rural” featuring abandoned house photography and artifacts from 9-11 p.m. with free admission.

JR Kortman Center for Design, 107 N. Main St., will have the shop open until 10 p.m. and bar open late. Friday will be the opening night of “DISGUISED: Portraits in Clay” by Lynn Fisher-Carlson and music provided by DJ’s DAS & JohnRawFunk.

Rockford Brewing Company, 200 Prairie St., will have music by taboo blah blah as they do their Oktoberfest & fall beer tap takeover beginning at 7:30 p.m. with free admission.

The Parlour, 110 N. 1st St., will have Rockford aRt.cade, its fifth all ages video game art exhibition. More than 20 local and regional visual artists will be featuring work inspired by the entire 57 year history of gaming. Event will go from 5-10 p.m. and has free admission.

Salvaged by Sonya, 330 E. State St., will have tarot card readings by David Skywatcher from 6-9 p.m. for $10 for 10 minutes. Advance reservations are accepted.

District Bar & Grill, 205 W. State St., will have Country night featuring Drew Baldridge and South 40 at 10 p.m.

Flipside Cinema inside Riverfront Museum Park will be showing Love & Mercy – the Brian Wilson bio-pic starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti. The showing will begin at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 7 and has a $5 admission. The film is sponsored by Swedish American and powered by The Element.

JustGoods Fair Trade Marketplace, 201 7th St., will have music by Tom Kastle – singer, songwriter, tall ship captain and teller of tales based in the Great Lakes. He toured as half of Tom & Chris Kastle for two decades, producing a dozen recordings and a soundtrack for PBS. There will also be art as part of the RUM Vintage Art Sale. Begins at 7 p.m. and donations are welcome.

Mary’s Place, 602 N. Madison St., will have music by Can’t Touch This beginning at 8 p.m.

Rockford City Market at State and Water Streets has local growers and vendors who sell artisan food, produce & handmade wares. Market features live music, kids activities, craft beer and wine. There will be music be the Phil Sudderberg Jazz Ensemble. The Market goes from 3:30-7:30 p.m. For more information visit

Lucette Salon & Spa, 508 E. State St., will be showcasing their own work as well as 20 other artists as part of ArtScene. This collection features what some may consider atypical or unusual art, so we welcome you to come determine for yourself, “Is this art?” Showing will go from 5-9 p.m. and is free to the public.

Kryptonite Bar, 308 W. State St., will have music by Smells Like Nirvana – Chicago’s grungiest tribute to Nirvana playing songs from several of Nirvana’s albums and their MTV Unplugged performance beginning at 9 p.m.
