Rockford Police Chief Chet Epperson is set to step down from his post, sources told The Rock River Times.
Epperson has held the post since 2006, but his position has come under increased scrutiny recently following the resignation of former Rockford Police Union President Terry Peterson.
A 3 p.m. press conference is scheduled with Mayor Larry Morrissey to discuss what the city has called “rumors surrounding Chief Epperson.” The city would not confirm that he is stepping down from his post.
Morrissey has been a stringent defender of Epperson, who he appointed just months into his first time as mayor. Following Peterson’s departure, he said that the union had been targeting Epperson “almost from the day he took office.”
