The YMCA Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, a long running successful program in the Rock River Valley, has not been run out of a school on-site in over five years. Marquette Elementary is changing that by partnering with the YMCA and the Big Brothers Big Sisters branch to provide a school site where students can actually see their Big Brother or Big Sister during the school day.
Marquette is piloting this program with 30 students that then get placed with a Big Brother or Sister to meet with once a week at school. The school is hoping that this will be successful and start a trend, that then other schools will try, to help students with social and emotional support by providing a consistent person that they can talk to, play games with, work on schoolwork, or just talk.
“This has not been done in over five years and we would love to show the partnership with the YMCA and Marquette and get this innovative idea out to other schools and show the public a positive side of what a local school and the Big Brothers Big Sisters are doing for our kids.” added Brock Morlan, Principal of Marquette Elementary.
