Ogle County offers holiday light recycling

Staff Report

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) is encouraging residents to recycle their holiday lights rather than throwing ones that no longer work into the garbage.

OCSWMD is working with Secure Recycling Services in Dixon, local fire departments, and city/village halls to collect and recycle the holiday lights. Light strings that will be accepted include Italian mini-lights, traditional lights (larger glass bulbs), LED lights, and other similar string lights. Extension cords will also be accepted. Rope lights, garland, live greens and wreaths, and other decorations will not be accepted. The lights will be sent to a recycling facility where they will be processed and separated into their different components for use in new products.

Drop off containers for holiday lights will be available beginning Thursday and going through January 31, 2016 at the following locations: Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department at 909 West Pines Road, Oregon; Ogle County Courthouse at 105 S. 5th Street, Oregon; Byron Fire Department at 123 N. Franklin Street; Rochelle Fire Department at 401 5th Avenue; Mt. Morris Fire Department at 15 East Center Street; Stillman Valley Fire Department at 200 S. Rural Street; Forreston Village Hall at 102 S. Walnut Street; Village of Davis Junction at 207 North Elm Street; and the City of Polo at 115 S. Franklin Street.

Any proceeds received from the recycling of the lights and wires will be donated to United Way in Ogle County. For more information, call the OCSWMD at 815-732-4020.
