Group hopes to break Guinness Record in honor of Brovember

Staff Report

Thousands of men across the country participate in various versions of “No-Shave November”.  Some men recognize it as an excuse to cut back on shaving for 30 days, but Rockford resident and barber (E. State Barbershop), Dave Armstrong, had an epiphany in 2012 as his client and friend was recovering from Prostate Cancer.

“My friend who was battling cancer was so important to the lives around him, yet I found in conversations with those close to me, men were still so hesitant to participate in health checks. I found a lack of promotion of the importance of Men’s health in general,” noted Dave Armstrong. “I wanted to put Rockford on the forefront of the mission to raise awareness.”

Dave Armstrong created Brovember Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which has been growing steadily since 2012, with the help of area businesses, leaders, and volunteers. Dave himself, volunteers every day of the week to make sure the mission creates waves through the fundraiser “Brovember Beard-a-Thon,” encouraging growing beards for a charitable donation throughout the month of November, fundraising events throughout the year, and now through pivotal collaborations.

This year Dave Armstrong has secured a partnership with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford to widen the reach of Brovember Inc. through an endowment which will fund a Prostate Cancer Research Program in Rockford as well as medical student scholarships.

This Friday Brovember Inc. will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “Largest Number of Beards and Mustaches in One Place” at the Rockford IceHogs Game at the BMO Harris Bank Center, 300 Elm St., from 7-10 p.m.

In 2014, Brovember Inc. fell only 30 beards short of undertaking the current world record which was set at the Newport, Rhode Island Winter Festival on February 12, 2011 with 462 participants. Brovember Inc. will need 463 or more bearded and mustached individuals to attend the IceHogs Game this Friday night and register to help set this record.

With local support, Dave Armstrong believes this World Record and a realization of Men’s Health can make history in Rockford, Illinois.
