Video: State leaders meet over budget
At the request from a number of good-government groups and mounting public pressure, Governor Bruce Rauner, House Speaker Michael Madigan, House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, Senate President John Cullerton, and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno met publicly in an effort to end Illinois’ six-month long budget impasse.
The meeting, hosted by the governor in his second floor Capitol office started with each attendee giving a brief speech, then a closed-door conversation, followed by media availabilities with each leader except Governor Rauner, who declined to take questions.
The two sides have been at odds for months; Republicans unwilling to go along with raising taxes until some of the governor’s reforms are enacted and Democrats unwilling to see Rauner’s reforms through.
