The Literacy Council offers tutor training program

Staff Report

The Literacy Council is offering an online tutor training workshop with two in-person sessions in January at The Literacy Council, 982 N. Main St. The in-person sessions will be held on Saturday, January 9 and January 30 from 10 a.m.-noon. In addition to the in-person sessions there is also 12 hours of online training.

Through the workshop volunteers can learn techniques for teaching reading or English as a second language (ESL) to adults. After completing the free tutor training tutors are then matched with students for one-on-one instruction at various locations for two hours each week.

The Literacy Council also has other volunteer opportunities such as helping with events, assisting in English or math classrooms or with the library, and helping in the office. For more information or to register to volunteer call The Literacy Council at 815-963-7323 or visit theliteracycouncil.org.

The Literacy Council was founded in 1985 with 40 adult students and currently serves over 4,000 people annually including adults with limited reading skills, children and families.
