The Rockford Police Department is now accepting applications for the upcoming Citizens Police Academy. This academy will run every Wednesday March 16-May 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the City of Rockford Wellness Center at 120 N. 3rd Street.
The purpose of this academy is to build relations between citizens and the police through training and education. The police academy produces a group of informed citizens who can then return to their neighborhoods to organize, encourage and mobilize others, as well as partner with police to help reduce crime.
The curriculum for this course includes sessions on patrol operations, 911 center operations, community policing, crime prevention, crime analysis, criminal law, city ordinances and more. Those wishing to participate must be 18 years of age or older.
The Citizens Police Academy has trained more than 200 citizens since it began in 2009 and has 32 active police volunteers.
