Currently it is the standard of care that new mothers receive the Tdap vaccine, a combined tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine, that protects the mother and prevents the spread of pertussis to the newborn. Up until now fathers, family members and caregivers were often forgotten of the possibility of spreading this as well.
Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a high contagious disease that is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing. Pertussis can affect those of all ages but can be very serious, even deadly, for babies less than a year old.
The Swedish American Outpatient Pharmacy is now offering a program that allows fathers, family members and caregivers to receive the Tdap vaccine in addition to the mother. Now as part of the program when the mother receives her vaccine in the hospital, the staff educates family members and caregivers about the benefits of the vaccine. If the individual is interested in receiving the vaccine Swedish American Outpatient Pharmacy staff can administer it on-site, thus avoiding a separate appointment at their office or a trip to a pharmacy.
“Tetanus and Diphtheria are rare, but can kill one in ten people who are infected, even with receiving proper medical care,” says SwedishAmerican Pharmacy Director Tom Carey. “We are very excited to offer this program to family members and are pleased to offer this much needed service at a convenient location for all those in need of Tdap vaccination.”
