RVC, community partners team up for sexual assault awareness

Staff Report

In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Rock Valley College is partnering with Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling (RSAC) and Remedies for a community event to educate on domestic violence and tools to help promote healthy relationships.

Guest speaker Dr. Malcom Astley will talk about losing his daughter Lauren to domestic violence at this free community event on Friday, April 1 in the RVC Student Center Atrium from 1-2:30 p.m. Dr. Astley will be available afterwards to answer questions from the audience.

Dr. Astley, a retired Boston high school principal, aims to promote healthy relationships, especially during break ups. His goal is to create awareness and provide education and tools for prevention, while impacting legislation.

His daughter Lauren’s domestic violence story was featured on CBS’ 48-hours special on break-up violence entitled “Loved to Death.”
