Next Saturday, May 14, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 245 will join forces with Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition and United Way of Rock River Valley to help Stamp Out Hunger!
This year marks the 24th anniversary of the Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive and has grown to be the largest single-day food drive nationally and locally. Last year, the community donated over 50,000 pounds of food in Rockford, Loves Park, and Machesney Park. All donated food is distributed throughout the eleven area food pantries that belong to the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition.
The NALC Branch 245’s annual Stamp Out Hunger! Food Drive is an effort to provide food to the local food pantries of the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition. And the need is even greater this year than in previous years. According to the Hunger Study in 2014 provided by Northern Illinois Food Bank, 14.4 percent of Winnebago County residents do not have a secure food source and qualify to receive assistance from area food pantries. Nearly 75 percent of children in Winnebago County are income-eligible for nutrition programs.
To help Stamp Out Hunger! in the Rock River Valley this year, leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods such as canned fruit, cereal, jelly, pasta, etc. next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 14. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes, cans or plastic jars. Local letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the area and deliver them to the Greater Rockford Pantry Coalition.
