Summerfield Zoo welcomes baby hyena

Summerfield Zoo has announced the arrival of their new male baby spotted hyena, also known as a laughing hyena, Banzai. The public is invited to help celebrate this addition on May 21 & 22.


“We are ecstatic to welcome Banzai to Summerfield Zoo. Banzai will be a future mate for our female spotted hyena Shenzee. Banzai will eventually move in to our Jeannie Hayes Memorial Hyena Habitat to live with our female spotted hyena Shenzee. We are excited to be starting a breeding program here at the zoo for spotted hyenas” says Rick Anderson, director at Summerfield Zoo.

In celebration of the birth of Banzai, Summerfield Zoo will have activities for children such as a coloring contest, trivia contest, and prizes. Banzai will also be featured in animal encounter presentations.

Summerfield Zoo is open Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children. All proceeds from the zoo go towards taking care of the animals, many of which of are rescues. The zoo features animal presentations, pony rides, petting zoo, baby goat bottle area, gift shop and snack shop.
