Crossroads Blues Society has a hot musical summer planned. Big shows in June and July, our festival in August and our regular programming offers a dozen opportunities for blues fans over those months.
June kicks off with 16-year-old Justin “Boots” Gate at All Saints Church, located at 624 Luther Drive in Byron. The show is Sunday, June 5 from 4-6 p.m. Justin is a great guitar and harmonica player and is simply amazing. No cover, free will offering for the artists at all the shows at the Church.
The Lyran Society Friday Night Fish Fry Blues is on June 10 from 7-10 p.m. with Mighty Mo Rodgers and Italian guitar great Luca Giordano. No cover charge, fish fry and dinners available. Lyran Society is located on 4th Avenue just east of 7th Street behind Katies Cup.
Second Saturday Blues on June 11 at the Hope and Anchor English Pub in Loves Park will have great Chicago blues guitar player Steve Ditzell and Blue Lightning. Steve toured and recorded with Junior Wells for many years. The show is 8-12 p.m. No cover at this great restaurant located at 5040 N. 2nd Street.
The big event for June is Mark Hummel and the Golden State-Lone Star Revue on Saturday, June 25 at the Mendelssohn PAC, 406 N. Main St. This event is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Featuring Little Charlie Baty and Anson Funderburgh on guitar, you will not want to miss this show. Tickets available at our website crossroadsbluessociety.com.
No show on 4th of July weekend at All Saints, but the second Saturday of the month features Paul Filipowicz, the great guitar player and songwriter from Milwaukee at the Hope and Anchor. This show is on July 9 from 8-10 p.m. The Lyran Club has Chicago blues great Smilin’ Bobby returning for a show from 7-10 p.m. on July 15.
July’s big event is the Braille Blues Daddy Bryan Lee at the Sinnissippi Park Bandshell in Rockford on the July 16. This free show starts at 6 p.m. Donations for Crossroads Blues in the Schools program will be accepted. The park is at 1401 N. 2nd Street.
August at All Saints is still TBD but the Hope and Anchor has The New Savages on the August 13 at 8 p.m. and the Lyran Club has Johnny and the Boomers on the July 19 at 7 p.m. August 27 is the Seventh Annual Crossroads Blues Festival at Lyran Park. It opens at 11 a.m. and music goes from noon to at least 9:30 p.m. Check it out at crossroadsbluesfestival.com. Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Tad Robinson, Ghost Town Blues Band, Joanna Connor, the Flaming Mudcats and Birddog and Beck will entertain all day. The show is $5 in advance, $10 at the door – a bargain.
The fall has more blues from Crossroads. At the Hope and Anchor will be Dave Specter on September 10, Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo on October 15, Reverend Raven on November 12, and the Jimmys on December 10. The Lyran Club continues the third Friday Fish Fry Blues with the New Savages on October 21 and the Harpo Mark Band on December 16. Schedules for the Lyran Club and All Saints are being booked now. Look for them and other great shows after the summer.
