As of Monday, July 18, the Rockford Mass Transit District will be making changes to its #24 Belvidere Route. This change will affect the times the bus arrives in Belvidere as well as the route itself. On July 18 the new #24 route will make four trips into Belvidere from the Rockford Mass Transit District East Side Transfer Center at 725 N. Lyford Road, and the new termination route will be Meadow Street. This will be a 40 minute route. The new times for the fixed route service leaving the Lyford Road terminal will be 8:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m., 1:40 p.m., and 4:40 p.m. only. There will be no bus on the #18 Bell School route at these times to accommodate the Belvidere runs. All other services on the Bell School route and #19 CherryVale route will remain unchanged.
These changes are being made due to changes in funding at the federal level. Partial funding of $25,000 has been provided by Belvidere to allow this portion of service from Rockford to Belvidere to continue. “Public transportation is important to the City of Belvidere and we are committed to its long-term growth. However, economic recovery from 2009 has been slower than expected. Belvidere does not have the means at the present time to fund the entire 35 percent. However we are able to fund $25,000 toward this effort and we are working with RMTD to offer the best service options possible. It is our funding that is keeping the fixed route service running in our community,” said Belvidere Mayor Michael Chamberlain.
The Belvidere route currently runs hourly Monday-Friday from 7:20 a.m.-5:20 p.m. The route leaves the Lyford Road terminal and runs to the Kmart on Business 20 before returning to the Lyford Road terminal.
