Ringland-Johnson supports KNIB

Staff Report

Cherry Valley-based Ringland-Johnson Construction recently donated a portable office trailer to Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful (KNIB) for the organization’s medication disposal collection in Machesney Park.

ringland_johnsonKNIB used the trailer to help oversee and organize its most recent collection drive at Machesney Park Mall. The nonprofit group hosts several collection drives each year for local residents to dispose of materials that are unsafe for landfills, such as scrap metal, paint and medication.

“Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful’s efforts protect something that affects each and every one of us on a daily basis,” said Ringland-Johnson Operations Assistant Mike Adamson. “We’re proud to support this worthy cause.”

The collection effort allows residents to get rid of expiring prescription or over-the-counter drugs safely and free of charge. Certain types of medication can seep into groundwater if not properly thrown away, creating potential health and environmental hazards. A U.S. Geological Survey found measurable amounts of one or more types of medication in 80 percent of water samples from 139 streams in 30 states.

Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful does not recycle paint or paint cans. Oil-based paint should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste site at 3333 Kishwaukee, Rockford, north of the Rock River Water Reclamation District. Hours are 8-4 Sat, 12-4 Sun. Latex and water-based paints should be used completely or dried (you can add concrete mix or other hardening substance). Once the paint becomes a solid, place the can marked Latex with the lid off next to garbage for pickup. Thank you to Ringland-Johnson Construction and others for your support of Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful.
