2016 RAMI nominations

Nominations for the 2016 RAMI (Rockford Area Music Industry) Awards are now open! Like last year, there are three separate award categories:

  • People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Artist, Favorite Venue, Favorite Radio Station and Favorite Special Event are determined by the nomination/voting of the general public.
  • Critic’s Choice Awards for Song, Album, Composer and Outstanding Achievement are nominated by RAMI Association members and awarded through the deliberations and vote of a panel of “experts”.
  • The RAMI Awards for all performer/tech/educator categories as well as the Lifetime Achievement and Community Service Awards are determined by a two-part nomination process and final vote by RAMI Association members only.

Each award category has its own nomination form. Submitting a nomination for one does not automatically make one eligible in either of the others.

This year’s ballot for organization members includes a Music Educator category for the first time. This is open to all school and private music instructors.

Detailed descriptions of the nomination/voting process and required forms can be found at ramiawards.com. There have been some changes this year so we encourage everyone who desires to be engaged in the selection process to visit the web site soon. This time around Association members will be required to set up an account password to log in to nominate or vote. This is a major change from past years.

The first round of nominations by Association members for RAMI category awards will close 10/28/16, so check your membership status or sign up to become a member soon. Membership forms are available online or from members of RAMI Committee. Membership dues are $10/year or $15 for a two-year membership. Active participation in some facet of the music field is a requirement.

The Awards ceremony for 2016 nominees will be held April 21, 2017 at the Tebala Center.

On a more personal note: as someone who has been involved with the RAMI Awards since their inception 25 years ago, I would like to thank all of the volunteers, sponsors and, of course, the many musicians and techs who have helped the RAMIs evolve into what it is today.

But, if we are to keep this loose association of artists and artisans a viable and credible entity over the next 25 years, it is important that we expand the ranks of the RAMI Organization so that its membership base becomes ever more representative of the entire local music scene.

Toward that end I urge everyone who is involved in the local music scene to visit ramiawards.com. At the very least you can leave comments about how to improve the organization or check out our events calendar, but it would be preferable if you actually spend a few bucks to join the Association (if you are eligible) and then take the time to participate in the nomination/voting process.

Good luck to all of this year’s prospective nominees and thank you!
