The Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful (KNIB) Clothing Drive, Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., has relocated to just four sites. Volunteers will be ready to collect donations of clothing at both of the KNIB Recycle Centers in Rockford and Roscoe, at the Machesney Park Town Center south mall parking lot and in Boone County at the Belvidere Township Office.
“We are thankful that the Village of Machesney Park did not hesitate to step up to assist us when our previous locations suddenly became unavailable,” said Lori Gummow, executive director of KNIB. “And we are fortunate that our Recycle Centers are strategically placed to serve both north and south County residents,” she added. “So as you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall and winter items, please donate items you no longer wear, or that the children have outgrown,” she said.
The agency will accept men’s, women’s or children’s clothing from any season, as well as shoes, hats, belts, purses, soft-sided luggage, throw rugs, curtains, stuffed (plush) toys, sheets, blankets, pillows and towels. The items donated should be clean and in plastic bags; no hangers or boxes.
The recycling drive provides an easy and convenient option for residents to donate clothing rather than putting it in the garbage where it ends up in landfills. The clothes will be redistributed worldwide or, if items are unwearable, will be shredded and re-manufactured into fiber-fill products. Proceeds benefit KNIB’s year-round environmental education programs.
Event support is provided by Belvidere Township and the Village of Machesney Park; media support from Mid-West Family Broadcasting, The Rock River Times, and 23WIFR Gray Television, Inc. Several other businesses support the effort, including Great Lakes Coca-Cola and two generous local companies providing trucks and drivers for the day: Advanced Waste Services/Covanta Environmental Services at Rockford and Debbie Carlson Berkshire Hathaway Stark Real Estate at Belvidere.
The locations for this weekend are:
- Belvidere Township Office, 8200 Fairgrounds Road, south of Business 20
- Machesney Town Center, 8702 N. 2nd St., south mall lot
- Roscoe Recycle Center, 13125 N. 2nd St., adjacent to Advanced Disposal
- Rockford Recycle Center 4665 Hydraulic Road, east of South Alpine Road
The change to these sites was due to a corporate policy change by Schnucks which has seen the Red Cross and Girl Scouts also moved off their locations. Schnucks formerly hosted and helped publicize the KNIB drive.
If residents are unable to drop off clothing October 8, items are accepted at the two KNIB Recycle Center locations year-round from 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday mornings. The Rockford Center is also open 2-5 p.m. Tuesdays.
