The Rockford Area Arts Council (RAAC) is offering “ArtsPlace Winter Intensive” for youth ages 14-18. It will be held January 2-6, 1-4 p.m. at Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 450 N. Main St., and Rockford Dance Company, 711 N. Main St. The Winter Intensive is modeled after RAAC’s longer summer ArtsPlace Apprenticeship program in which youth work on teams under the guidance of professional artists to create original works.
The idea for the Winter Intensive came from a former ArtsPlace apprentice, Duncan Richardson, who did an internship in Kurdistan last year teaching photography to high school students. Sharon Nesbit-Davis, Interim Director of the Rockford Area Arts Council said, “When ArtsPlace kids come to me with a proposal, I’m inclined to say “YES”…if we can figure out how to do it. Since the Rockford Schools have a two-and-a-half week break this year it’s the perfect time to do this.”
For the ArtsPlace Winter Intensive, youth will choose a week-long class in Dance, Theater, Photography, Printmaking, or Visual Arts. On the final day, there will be a talent share celebration with all classes. Teaching Artists are Kate Kilgore (theater), Bruce McDonald (print), Esteban Perez (visual arts) Duncan Richardson (photography), Joey Zanders (Dance).
Registrations will be taken until seats are full. Last day to register is Friday, December 30. Tuition is $100 and partial scholarships are available. The Arts Council welcomes donations for scholarships.
