Rockford Rocked Interview: The first single off the self-titled album from Name The Moon is called “Los Angeles”. This song has sort of a haunting quality to it that really leaves me wanting more. How did this one come about?
Derek Luttrell: That was a tune that Mossy (guitarist) had written before the band was formed. It was written on an iPad using software instruments. We’d decided that it fit the mood of the band and started playing it in our set.
RRI: What’s your personal favorite track?
DL: I like the song “Uncle Lenny”. It’s only about a minute and a half long, it’s dirty and the words were lifted directly from a Craigslist ad.
RRI: Seriously? Where was the material recorded?
DL: Yes. We recorded the album at The Midwest Sound, right here in Rockford. Dan McMahon produced and mixed it there. We had it mastered in Milwaukee by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room.
RRI: The band includes yourself, Gavin Epperson, veteran musicians Mossy Vaughn, Scott Ford and Jerry Sofran. How did you guys get together and what have you learned by working with these guys if anything?
DL: It started with Mossy and I writing songs together on Monday nights in his bedroom. We did that for a while and decided to record what we’d written. This was originally just going to be a one off project, but after we got the guys together and started rehearsing, it turned in to a real thing. Before I was playing in this band, I was only singing songs with an acoustic guitar. Playing with this group has taught me to listen closer and play more tastefully.
RRI: NTM recently signed with Idol Records out of Dallas, Texas. Does this mean you will be taking the show on the road? A tour perhaps?
DL: We plan on it. We love Rockford, but we’d like to spread our musical seed.
RRI: Who are some of the people in the business that you admire as a musician and who (or what) do you draw your influences from?
DL: I know influences vary from band member to band member, but my favorites are Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits and The Jesus Lizard .
RRI: When is the official album release date and where can we buy the music?
DL: The album is officially out March 10. It will be available online (iTunes/Amazon etc.) and in a few select stores. Also at idolrecords.com.
RRI: Alright. I’m going to say a word or phrase and you answer with the first thing that pops into your head. Ready?
RRI: Arctic Monkeys (English rock band).
DL: Pacific Primates.
RRI: Man bun. Yes or no, and be honest fella.
DL: There’s no I in “man bun”.
RRI: The Edge (U2 guitarist).
DL: Pedal board.
DL: The best!
RRI: Favorite riff to honk out on the guitar to impress your friends?
DL: “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac.
RRI: Finally. Why does the hipster only listen to dead musicians? Give up? He knows they’ll always be underground. Funny or not really?
DL: I like it!
