Rocktown Adventures honors local heroes

Rocktown Adventures, a local specialty outdoor retailer and adventure club, honored two local men who saved a kayaker in the Rock River last week at a presentation at its location on Madison Street in downtown Rockford. Rocktown Adventures presented the individuals with fishing kayaks, partially donated by NuCanoe and additional safety gear to honor their heroism.

“When we heard about this story, we knew we wanted to honor these men for their heroism,” said Peter Provenzano, Owner of Rocktown Adventures and CEO of SupplyCore. “We wanted to thank the Rockford Fire Department, our everyday heroes, for their life-saving efforts and use this opportunity to highlight water safety and remind everyone that paddling on the Rock River is a safe and fun activity.”

Rocktown Adventures Owner Peter Provenzano and General Manager Kevin Versino, in partnership with Matthew Knott, Division Chief of the Rockford Fire Department, wanted to bring awareness to water safety by honoring Logan Bohnenkamp and Jake Kaltved. The team shared that the Rock River is safe and fun for recreation, but like any outdoor activity, there are things you should learn before participating in any water activities such as:

  • Know the local rules and regulations for your waterway.
  • Proper paddling techniques and how to maneuver through any obstacles.
  • Know the proper safety gear to have with you such as a life vest or whistle.

“We are very happy to be a part of this presentation today to not only discuss water safety, but also to honor our local heroes,” said Matthew Knott, Division Chief, Rockford Fire Department. “As we are approaching the warmer months, it’s important to know the precautions you should take if you are recreating on the water and we encourage everyone who plans to do so to follow the critical guidelines.”
