Olson Beach closed to swimmers

LOVES PARK — The buildup of silt in the lake at Rock Cut State Park has forced officials to close Olson Beach to swimmers.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced Monday that Olson Lake’s water quality has diminished because siltation has made it too shallow and too warm.

Officials say that Olson Lake was designed to be a silt basin for the park’s larger Pierce Lake. But that function has contributed to vegetation that interferes with water quality necessary for swimming and beach activities.

Officials say swimming is available at nearby facilities. They include Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area near Lena and the Rockford Park District’s Standfield Beach at Levings Lake Park .

IDNR also announced 2017’s Free Fishing Days, coming June 16-19. Groups interesting in hosting a Free Fishing Days event are invited to contact IDNR’s Tom Munroe via email, tom.munroe@illinois.gov for more information.
