West Side Show Room announces New Play festival

The West Side Show Room announces the 2017 Rockford New Play Festival. The festival is seeking new 10 minute plays by playwrights from Rockford and around the world.

This year, the festival is encouraging playwrights to submit plays that respond to the the recent Women’s March on Washington and which answer the question, “Where Are You Going?”

Six scripts will be chosen as official selections of the festival and presented in an evening of staged readings in Rockford on August 24. The Festival Reading will be performed in front of an audience and will also be broadcast live on Facebook.

Each of the six playwrights will receive $150. Official selections are chosen from hundreds of entries.

The Rockford New Play Festival is the first and only theater festival of its kind in the Rockford Area. In its third year, the festival started in 2014 as a collaboration between The Rockford Area Arts Council and The West Side Show Room.

“The first year we were expecting thirty people and ended up squeezing over a hundred into the tiny recital room at the Mendelssohn PAC’s Starr Center,” said Mike Werckle, Artistic Director of The West Side Show Room. “We had people standing in the hallway, and realized there was great community support for this kind of event.”

The festival provides an opportunity for aspiring and established playwrights from the Rockford Area to have their work evaluated, selected, and presented professionally to the public alongside national and international playwrights. Members of the public have the opportunity to experience brand new theatrical ideas and participate in vital discourse with the playwrights and other theater practitioners who are in attendance.

Plays can be submitted online at thewestsideshowroom.com. The deadline for submissions is May 15. For more information contact The Rockford New Play Festival at rocknewplayfest@gmail.com.
