Wisconsin man gets county jail time for beating 2-month-old daughter
OSHKOSH, Wis. — A Wisconsin man was sentenced to time in the county jail for beating his 2-month-old daughter.
Richard A. Root, 21, of Oshkosh, was sentenced last week in a Winnebago County (Wisconsin) court to six months in jail for child neglect resulting in great bodily harm. He pleaded no contest as part of a plea agreement.
The sentence stems from an incident in March during which Root broke 20 bones in the toddler’s body. Her injuries included nine broken ribs, a broken arm and a broken leg. The baby also had a brain bleed, and was flown from Aurora Medical Center to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee for treatment. She was released to a family member.
Police say that some of the baby’s injuries occurred when Root shook her. Root initially told police that he knelt on one of his daughter’s legs when has changing her diaper. He later said he “snapped” because he was not getting enough sleep.
Root was also sentenced to seven years probation. He must avoid alcohol and drugs, maintain employment or full-time schooling and undergo counseling. R.
