IceHogs finish Griffins in shootout

DOWNTOWN — It took four rounds of a shootout, but the Rockford IceHogs skated away with a 3-2 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins here Saturday night.

The game-winner came from defenseman Viktor Svedberg, who fired a blistering high-slot slapper as Jared Coreau went to his knees couldn’t react fast enough.




Rockford goaltender Jeff Glass turned away Axel Holmstrom, Ben Street, Matt Lorito and Vili Saarijarvi in the shootout to earn his ninth win of the season. Coreau, stopped Tomas Jurco, David Jampf and Matthew Highmore before Svedberg iced the contest.

The Griffins forced overtime and eventually the shootout after rallying with a last-second goal to tie the game at 2-2. Matthew Ford batted a pass out of the air from Lorito and the puck bounced off of Glass’ helmet and trickled into the net with less than two seconds remaining.

David Kampf and Tomas Jurco each scored a goal and registered an assist to finish with multi-point nights for the IceHogs. Lorito also scored the tying goal for the Griffins nine minutes into the opening period to make it 1-1.

Glass finished with 31 saves and has now posted a 2.07 GAA over his last 10 games since Dec. 1.

Next Home Game: The Rockford IceHogs return to the BMO Harris Bank Center to host the Iowa Wild on Friday, Dec. 29. The first 2,500 fans in attendance Friday will receive a free IceHogs fleece blanket, courtesy of Dental Dimensions.
