Man arrested in fatal shooting on Adams Street

ROCKFORD – A Rockford man is in custody following a shooting that left another man dead and a woman wounded Tuesday morning on the city’s near-east side.
Quinton Smith, 23, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and unlawful use of weapons by a street gang member. Police say the male victim, a 20-year-old Rockford man, was shot during and argument that began in the 100 block of Adams Street and continued to East State Street near SwedishAmerican Hospital. A 20-year-old woman was also hit by gunfire. Her injuries were not life threatening.
Police arrived on the scene after receiving an alert from the department’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system at around 5:45 a.m. Smith was arrested by narcotics detectives and SCOPE officers at approximately 1:30 p.m., at a residence in the 700 block of Royal Avenue.
The male victim was pronounced dead just after 6 a.m. at SwedishAmerican Hospital. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family. Smith and the male victim knew each other, Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said during a press conference.
