Editor’s note: The following letter was read to the Rockford City Council May 21.

Dear Mayor Morrissey, staff and City Council members,

On Friday, May 18 at approximately 5:30 p.m. while enjoying the peace and tranquility of my home, I heard my mother yell out two blood-curdling screams. Upon entering the kitchen, I saw an intruder in my home. He had my mother pressed up against the wall with a knife to her throat.

At that point, I was fighting for my life and that of my mother. After seven minutes had passed, the fight of my life was over. The intruder, assailant, thief, homicidal maniac, devil was gone. He had fled out the same door of which he had entered, with me following after. Unfortunately, he got away.

Over the last several months within a three-block area of my home, there have been three home invasions, three drug operations shut down, gunfire in the middle of the day on Broadway, numerous prostitutes and vehicles trolling the neighborhood on an endless basis, looking for drugs and prostitutes. My neighbor and his wife were riding their motorcycle on Broadway when they were involved in a hit-and-run accident. His wife landed on the hood of the truck. The truck sped away, running through three red lights with her hanging on for dear life until she slid off as he rounded a corner.

Mayor Morrissey, there is a sickness in this city, a cancer. I don’t have the answers about how to fix it, and I don’t think you do, either, but something must be done. Something has to change. As with all cancers, if it isn’t treated, it ends up killing its host. I think the city of Rockford and its citizens deserve better.

Respectfully,
Toby Haldeman

I would say it’s hard to believe, but really it’s not. Within two months after the March primary election, with a landslide for incumbents, including Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen, John Cabello, Frank Gambino, Kyle Logan and others, Winnebago County is experiencing a dose of reality totally ignored and denied during the campaigns.

We were told our taxes weren’t going up! Now, most of us are seeing an 8 to 12 percent property tax increase this year. My taxes alone went up around $500.

Then, suddenly, the landfill wants to be expanded by more than 200 acres and, in the process, the chairman, who during his campaign claimed he was there for the “little guy,” now has banned citizens from speaking to the county board reps directly about the landfill.

And, to add insult to injury, just last week it was reported that the county is voting on giving pay raises to the chairman and four county officials. The raises would be upward of $8,400 total. This is outrageous!

The two county board members (Cabello and Gambino) who want support to move on to Springfield need to spearhead the lead to stop this abuse of power and exercise fiscal restraint. After all, if they can’t show leadership in stopping government waste here in Winnebago County, how will they ever accomplish anything in Springfield?

I certainly don’t expect Chairman Christiansen to stand up against the pay raises any more than he will stand up against the landfill expansion, but let’s see if John Cabello and Frank Gambino have the guts to do what’s right.

Several weeks ago, if you saw thousands of bright yellow bags along streets and roads in Winnebago County, you should be reminded that they were not simply tossed there. The bags contained litter collected by some special people. Again, volunteers made our county shine like it should.

Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful wants to thank the many dedicated volunteers and sponsors who made the Great American Cleanup a huge success despite a cold and rainy start. While tons of trash were picked up April 28, some volunteers decided (because of the weather) to take the following week to finish up. Targeted areas of need were cleaned from South Beloit to New Milford, from Pecatonica to Cherry Valley, and areas in between with the help of townships, cities, the county to include landfills, law enforcement and volunteer inmates. Thank you to the businesses, hospitals, industries, groups, individuals, banks and clubs. Kids and seniors worked side by side; a tip of the hat to the police who assisted.

The good that comes with all of this effort is, in part, to bring awareness of civic responsibility. By doing our part in making every day a clean-up day, we are together working to improve our community.

Keep it up, Winnebago County; we’re looking better!

Thank you,

Let’s take a look at some recent history. After the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama put a moratorium on oil exploration in the Gulf, costing thousands of jobs. Even following a court order to begin issuing permits, the Obama administration refused.

The Keystone pipeline is a project that would give the U.S. a huge boost in local oil supply. Obama refused to sign the permit that would allow it to cross the boundary between Canada and the U.S., costing thousands of jobs. Following that, he went to Oklahoma to take credit for work on the southern portion of the pipeline, a function over which he has no control.

Obama, through the Department of Energy (DOE), has granted loan guarantees to countless “green” companies, many of which were in trouble at the time. As predicted, many of those companies have gone broke, costing thousands of jobs, and leaving taxpayers to pick up the cost of the loans.

Most recently, Obama, through the DOE, has issued new rules that will effectively cut coal-powered generating plants by 25 percent, costing thousands of jobs. People in West Virginia alone are projecting 30 percent increases in their electric rates.

When this president gets in front of an audience and talks about creating jobs, please look at what he is doing, rather than what he is saying.

The facts are coming out about the ObamaCare bill, the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Of course, we first had to pass the 2,700-page bill “to find out what’s in it.” First, the cost, first estimated at $900 billion over 10 years, will be $1.76 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office, or double.

Second, half a trillion dollars, $500 billion, was taken from Medicare funding over 10 years, because we so value “the greatest generation.” That transfer allowed Democrats to claim ObamaCare was completely funded. And Democrats cry that Paul Ryan wants to push seniors off a cliff!

Third, the legislation includes 700 sentences beginning, “The Secretary shall…” referring to Kathleen Sibelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Sibelius has granted the state of Maine a waiver from a critical provision of the law (Maine is a Blue State), while denying a waiver to the state of Oklahoma (a Red State). How was this decision made? It’s none of your business. As of January, about 1,200 employers, most of them unions, had been granted waivers. ObamaCare gives the Secretary of HHS vast powers of decision-making, and seemingly no accountability to the Congress, which passed this monstrosity.

Large employers are telegraphing their intentions to pay the $2,000 per employee fine for dropping health care coverage rather than the $10,000 per employee cost of coverage. This will “flush” employees into a pool of Medicaid recipients, passing the costs of the insurance onto Uncle Sam. But not to worry — Uncle Sam can always borrow more from China.

A fellow who is an ObamaCare expert quoted in The Wall Street Journal is our speaker this Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m., at Rockton Community Centre, 302 W. Main St. C. Steven Tucker is lively, informed and can answer your questions. All are welcome.

Dear Frank [Schier, editor and publisher],

I commend you for this frank, truthful “Editor’s Note.” [re: “Public hearings on landfill expansion move to BMO Harris Bank Center,” April 25-May 1, 2012].

These gross violations of the people’s will are happening to a greater or lesser extent, all over our county.

The politicians are not the “Public Servants” any longer.

Our city council recently voted to give a new bar/restaurant a 1 percent sales tax kickback for five years. Does anyone else feel this is unfair to taxpayers as well as other bar/restaurant owners?

I am pro business and new business, but I am also pro fairness. The 1 percent sales tax hike referendum that was approved by voters states the funds would be used to fix our roads and infrastructure. “Paving the way to our future” was the slogan used. The referendum did not say the funds could be used for kickbacks/rebates to bars, restaurants or special interests. I do not believe the referendum would have passed if it did.

I wonder if other bar and restaurant owners feel this is unfair to them? I also wonder how the new bar owners feel about taking an unfair advantage over other local bars and restaurants (their peers), especially in the downtown area. I question the legality and fairness of this city council action.

I hope either the city council reverses this or the new bar owners would use good sportsmanship and fairness as their guide and refuse taking our sales tax dollars meant for repairing our roads, sidewalks and infrastructure.

President Obama’s anti-business agenda has hurt our economy to such an extent that our tax base has been greatly eroded. It’s hard to get more taxes from someone who’s unemployed or underemployed, especially considering these people require money from our taxes.

Locally, the property taxes have gone down, but the taxes in many instances have increased only to provide needed services from a lower amount.

Our state is considering putting more of their public pension burden on the local governments as if they have more money to do this.

Some say we are likely to become more like Greece or some other European country with mobs rioting in the streets for more money that their government doesn’t have. Has it already happened in our country as evidenced by the ”occupy” movements, or not that far away in Madison, Wisconsin?

It seems obvious to all that the county board chairman is in favor of the landfill expansion near Baxter Road because of the enticements of additional revenue from “tipping fees.” The chairman appears concerned about stuffing “county coffers” more than public health and loss of economic development in the I-39 corridor. How can the county be that desperate for money, after all the property taxes and sales taxes they have levied and raised over the years? Is someone in local county government embezzling $50 million like just happened in Dixon? I hope not, but this is an age when taxpayers more than ever need accountability from elected officials. I have a suggestion that might help us all. I would encourage the county board members to vote against the landfill expansion, for it will only serve to increase the flying trash, toxic smells, and future water pollution to our community. Instead, the county board should pass legislation to “FINE” Winnebago Landfill” for littering Highway I-39 and any county roads that are affected. I see signs all the time saying “$500 Fine for Littering.” So why don’t we start charging the owners of “Winnebago Landfill” for all the trash that continues to litter our roads and community? I’ve heard county officials say over and over, “Do it for one, do it for all!” How about applying that philosophy to the garbage dump that plans to take over our community? The county would take in “tons” of money at $500 per piece of trash, the neighborhoods would be cleaner, and the landfill expansion tipping fees would be unenticing! It sounds to me like a WIN-WIN situation, except for those individuals blinded by greed.

Engine trouble symptoms can mean major problems with your car. If you see, hear, feel or smell anything that is out of the ordinary, take your vehicle to a reputable automotive repair shop or engine installation center for diagnosis to avoid the inconvenience and unexpected cost of a breakdown.

Symptoms of major engine trouble include:

• excessive smoke from exhaust — particularly dark smoke indicates oil leaking into the combustion chamber

• oil on the driveway indicates a leak that will cause the oil level to drop

• excessive oil consumption

• unusual noise from the engine such as knocking or tapping

• illuminated engine indicator lights: oil, water or engine

If your car or truck is diagnosed with major engine damage, but the rest of your vehicle is in relatively good shape, talk with your technician about your options, including repowering with a remanufactured/rebuilt engine. For the cost of an average down payment on a new car or truck, a vehicle’s engine can be repowered with a remanufactured/rebuilt engine, gaining years of reliable service without monthly car payments and higher insurance rates.

With repowering, a vehicle’s engine or an identical one from another like-vehicle is completely disassembled, cleaned, machined and remanufactured/rebuilt. Unlike used or junk-yard engines with an unknown performance and maintenance history, remanufactured/rebuilt engines are dependable, reliable and backed by excellent warranty programs.

To learn more about the benefits of remanufactured/rebuilt engines, visit the Engine Rebuilders Council at www.enginerebuilder.org.

April 19, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) has announced a series of initiatives to address the state’s fiscal and public health concerns. Included in his proposal is a plan to increase the state’s cigarette tax by $1 per pack. Illinois’ current cigarette tax rate of 98 cents per pack ranks Illinois 32nd among all U.S. states. The American Cancer Society supports this proposal.

The American Cancer Society is pleased Gov. Quinn is combining smart fiscal and public health policy. Smoking remains the leading cause of cancer, and this proposal will not only reduce the burden on the state’s Medicaid program for years to come, but more importantly, it will save lives and improve the health of people across Illinois, particularly in curtailing youth smoking.

The facts are staggering, and Illinois can and should do better. If the cigarette tax increase passes, we estimate that more than 70,000 youth will never smoke, and more than 38,000 current Illinois residents will be spared from premature death caused by smoking. Thus, the proposal’s upside potential to reduce the pain and suffering from cancer and other diseases is enormous. From our perspective, the measure offers remarkable promise to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

The American Cancer Society and its legion of supporters commend Gov. Quinn and encourage our legislators to adopt this proposal quickly so the lifesaving outcomes can begin.

The Rock River Times ran an article last week [online: “Report: Illinois ranks high for early childhood education access for 3-year-olds,” April 10] quoting preschool advocates who claim that reduced funding for state pre-K programs is a dire situation. That claim is actually not supported by the research about early childhood education, which universally concludes that small children grow best emotionally and mentally when in a stable home with a loving parent caregiver rather than an outside institution. Pre-K programs nearly never boost such children academically and socially because they already have all the right ingredients for a good future.

Pre-K programs are actually best targeted at children who do not have a stable home or literate parents, and function as a substitute for deficient parenting or home life. These are the children that the research shows pre-K programs help. But they are a minority.

This is why advocates for universal preschool are wrong, and their advocacy is not grounded in the research, which instead demonstrates that any subsidized preschool should be targeted at these specific kids with poor homes. In a state with fiscal problems that will soon be as bad as California’s, it is important that taxpayers and parents understand that state-funded universal preschool is actually unnecessary for children’s well-being.

Our Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) busing company was dedicated unto our city by our ex-mayor John McNamara and his associates. However, I have witnessed for myself the deplorable condition of this bus station — and that the inside floors are hardly ever mopped.

And the outside is littered with discarded cigarette butts, and sometimes their trash containers are overflowing. Also, some of the bus drivers are not too polite because of their tight schedule. They have told people to “hurry up.” So, they (the drivers) zip around, and sometimes they don’t wait until everyone is seated. Because when I was getting on, the bus lunged forth, and I was flung against (hardly) the back of the bus’s seat, which caused my cracked ribs to get aggravated.

So, frankly, I don’t believe that the establishment does give a damn! And I ask, how can they remedy these problems? By hiring two part-time janitors (day shift and nightly), lengthening the bus drivers’ schedules, putting up “No Littering” signs. And teaching that safety comes first!

May 1, State Rep. Joe Sosnowski (R-69), Rockford/Belvidere, will select and provide 16 students with one free semester of college education at an Illinois state university. The cost will be $200,000 or more. The legislature has not provided funds for this giveaway. The universities pass this expense along to paying students and their parents in the form of increased tuition. This is a hidden state tax. The students may add this additional cost to their student loans. At current student loan rates, this added amount will double every 10 years. Rep. Sosnowski’s stated goals include the following: “Conservative Pro-family Approach to Government and Business: Limited government … should protect the family’s income and reduce the need for taxation.” See the goals at http//www.joesosnowski.com/issues/index.htm.

As we look back on 42 years of celebrating Earth Day, the Postal Service continues to build on the tradition of more than 230 years of promoting a greener lifestyle. Throughout our history, we’ve championed new ideas to help minimize our environmental impact across the country.

We’ve created sustainable spaces for employees and customers working in and conducting business at 33,000 postal facilities across the country. Postal facilities are renovated to use less energy and water, create less waste, and have less impact on the environment.

We’ve been at the cutting edge of transportation. With the largest civilian fleet in the world — nearly 216,000 vehicles traveling more than 1.2 billion miles a year — the Postal Service looks for ways to reduce the environmental impact of our fleet by employing alternative fuel, electric and hydrogen fuel vehicles. And let’s not forget our “fleet to feet” service, where we deliver 9,000 mail routes every day by walking — the most energy-efficient way to deliver mail. We also have nearly 80,000 “park and loop” routes where letter carriers deliver mail on foot on the majority of the route after driving to neighborhoods.

We’ve developed innovative ways to recycle and reduce mail waste. More than a half-billion packages and envelopes provided to customers are 100 percent recyclable and created using environmentally-friendly materials. We also partner with companies, agencies and organizations in mail-back programs to safely recycle and properly dispose of e-waste, including small electronics, compact fluorescent lamps and discarded or expired pharmaceuticals.

Our highly successful “Read, Respond, Recycle” program is a simple, free Post Office lobby recycling program that is currently being used at more than 10,000 postal facilities across the country, and locally, including the Rockford Post Office and its surrounding stations. By placing secure recycle bins in Post Office lobbies, the Postal Service is making it easier for customers and business to make environmentally-friendly choices.

All these initiatives have helped contribute to the Postal Service recycling 215,000 tons of material in 2011. But it doesn’t stop there.

Mail is big business. Much of it comes from small- and mid-sized businesses, like the ones in our community. These businesses see the value of the mail, whether it be catalogs, direct mail, newsletters or advertising mail. They see the direct impact mail has on their customers and the local economy. And their efforts have helped contribute to the $1 trillion mailing industry that employs more than 8 million people worldwide.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the nation’s environmental watchdog, advertising mail represents less than 2.4 percent of the nearly 254 million tons of waste created annually. Still, that’s too much for us, and that’s why the Postal Service continues to be committed to sustainability and minimizing mail’s environmental impact not only in our local community, but throughout America.

Concern for the environment didn’t begin with Earth Day — it led to Earth Day. We at the Postal Service understand this and will remain steadfast by eliminating waste, reducing energy, and lowering our carbon footprint. That’s being sustainable. That’s being responsible.

Once more, the Rockford teachers’ union has manipulated the teachers to do the union’s bidding. The strike is a black eye on the community. The best way for an organization to keep its power is to show off its power. Could not the teachers have voted from their respective schools via the Internet? The Coronado, indeed. Could they not have hired an arbitrator to settle the dispute?

Why didn’t we hear from the dozen teachers who were against the strike? I, for one, would like to know their reasons.

In the fall of 1972, my very first year of teaching, a strike was called. Being new and eager to get started, I went to my school to work on lesson plans. I promptly received threatening phone calls and letters. Frightened, I began to wonder if I had chosen an honorable career at all.

Herman Melville once ended a sad short story with the words, “Ah, humanity.” He was right.

I was pleased to see your article in The Rock River Times, “DNR needs new approach to CWD in deer.”

I have had a working deer herd in my IDNR forest since 2009. In 2011, two buck deer alerted me that two men with guns had climbed the fence and entered our posted west forest. I responded immediately, and they quickly left. I usually carry a camera, which enabled me to photo [sic] them. One was an “IDNR sharpshooter” who was responsible for part of the Ogle County slaughter.

These “sharpshooters” had been telling people they had the authority to come on their property as IDNR officers. I called the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department and was told that if they came on posted property, they were eligible for a $2,000 fine each.

The IDNR budget was canceled in the fall of 2010 by Gov. Pat Quinn. I phoned Mark Miller, executive director of IDNR, to ask who was paying for the sharpshooters. He wasn’t available, but the lady who took the call said she believed they were being paid by volunteers. She took a message for Mr. Miller to call me. He didn’t. The sharpshooter program seems to be embarrassing to the IDNR.

CWD in both deer and elk might be controlled through natural immunity to the prion (protein virus) that causes it. The infected deer die in about a year or two, time enough to produce offspring that could be immune and pass that immunity to the next generation. If so, nature may correct the problem in the same way descendants of European humans who survived the Black Plague passed on resistance to the disease to the next generations.

Thank you for writing a well-thought-out article.

The American Military Society (AMS) urges Congress to pass the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act (H.R. 1449) on behalf of its membership, which includes active, reserve, National Guard, retired and veterans of the uniformed services, their families and survivors.

Right to Repair levels the competitive playing field for motoring consumers and between new car dealerships and independent repair shops by requiring that car companies provide full, fair access at a reasonable cost to all non-proprietary service information, tools and safety-related bulletins needed to repair today’s high-tech motor vehicles.

When local repair shops are denied access to non-proprietary repair information from the car companies, competition is limited. All consumers benefit from competition, but those serving our country and their families at home derive particular benefit from being able to obtain affordable, effective and convenient repairs for their vehicles.

As cars become more complicated with more computer systems, the problem becomes more acute. Military personnel and their families are often stationed in remote locations far from any dealerships, relying on independent repair shops to service their vehicles. Most do not have the time to find the nearest dealership, drive all the way there and wait for their sole source of transportation to be repaired. If critical repairs go unperformed, then safety may be compromised.

The American Military Society encourages all service members, their families and all Americans to visit www.righttorepair.org to send a letter to each of their Senators and their Representatives, urging them to support this legislation.

I am a lifelong resident of Rockford, a frequent library patron and a lover of books. What is happening now at the Downtown Branch is nothing less than a crime against not only the people of this community, but against the concept of library itself. We all know about the threat to the library system since out-of-town Director Frank Novak was given a blank check by the library board to overhaul it. What many do not know is that books are already disappearing from library shelves in massive numbers from the Downtown Branch. Library personnel have testified to this, and a walk through the second and third floors makes this plundering easily visible. Here is a link to a picture of empty shelves on the second floor: http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/s320×320/524128_10151506759125145_898020144.

Where are the books going? What criteria is being used to get rid of them? What accountability is there? This despicable activity is being swept under the rug. These books are NOT the private collection of Novak and the Board … they belong to the CITIZENS OF ROCKFORD and have been paid for by OUR MONEY! It is unbelievable to the point of parody. What library system trashes their own books in secret?

I have already contacted Mayor Larry Morrissey about this issue and have also gotten in touch with Kent Fiels, executive director of the American Library Association. I’m also trying to get Occupy Rockford involved. This issue should be of great importance to anybody who loves books and libraries. I know e-books are part of the equation today, but this behavior is OUTRAGEOUS! I’ve also heard that plans are already in place to rent out parts of the Downtown Library once it’s been emptied of its most valuable resource.

I have put up with a lot of dismal activity in Rockford over the years, but this is the end. I have no intention of living in a community so backward, so totally bereft of respect for history, culture and learning. The city is beyond saving if this lunatic activity continues. I urge all citizens to get involved.

How about Americans focus on principles, not personalities, in the upcoming presidential elections? George W. Bush didn’t nearly destroy America, his policies did. President Barack Obama took a Republican idea of an individual mandate for health insurance. Some thought it was a great principle, until Obama signed on to it. Mitt Romney doesn’t even have the courage to stand up for it, even though he borrowed it from conservative think tanks and the like. Republican policies and philosophies keep us in financial turmoil and war, and Democrats routinely bring prosperity and peace. I get perplexed when I hear so many people who can’t wait to go back to the same failed policies with a different candidate.

Following the recent primary election, I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to return to Springfield to address the state’s issues and to be a strong voice for the Rockford area.

I look forward to continuing my efforts to make our district an even greater place to live. I will work to do everything in my power to make our neighborhoods safer, fight for tougher laws against sex offenders and violent criminals, keep illegal guns off the streets, crack down on gangs, and create good-paying jobs for our community.

During these tough economic times, the General Assembly has many tough decisions to make.

Tax Day, April 15, it will be 206 days, or six months, 22 days, until the Nov. 6 election. Were we pleased at the primary election outcome? Speaking for Northern IL Tea Party, we were not buoyed up by Congressman Adam Kinzinger’s defeat of Manzullo. Don Manzullo was the most conservative of the 11 Republicans in the Illinois delegation. Kinzinger is No. 8.

We know that the Democrats/unions came out in force for Kinzinger. Manzullo had $350,000 spent against him by out-of-state organizations, including $100,000 from a union-backed organization. The smooth-talking first-term congressman may face no opposition in the general election.

What does the Tea party hope to accomplish in the time before Nov. 6? We face an implacable enemy in the mainstream media (MSM), accepting every excuse President Barack Obama offers. Gas prices passed $4, ObamaCare will crush employment, and ever-increasing regulation is killing businesses. Join us on Tax Day, Sunday, April 15, with Congressmen Joe Walsh (8th) and Bobby Schilling (17th) at the Band Shell of Sinnissippi Park from 1-4 p.m. in Rockford. It is the three-year anniversary of Rockford Tea Party, and anyone may give a 1-minute speech!

We are slowly being socialized. I saw a cartoon from the Chicago Tribune of a Russian Communist, Leon Trotsky. The cartoon was labeled “Plan of Action for U.S. Spend! Spend! Spend! Under the guise of recovery — Bust the Government — Blame the Capitalists for the failure — Junk the Constitution and declare a Dictatorship.” Wow! Did I mention that this was published April 21, 1934?

President Barack Obama is blaming the rich oil companies for huge profits. The taxes on a gallon of gas are 18.4 cents federal with an average of 48.8 cents total. This is much higher than the oil companies’ profits. Now, he is saying that we have to stop the big oil subsidies. What?! Now, he is calling an investment in equipment that can be deducted as an expense a “subsidy”! Oil pays 41 percent tax compared to 26 percent like Apple and other business taxes. (Heritage Foundation)

Other things to watch: The teachers’ strike in Rockford. The top 800 teacher employees in Rockford make an average annual gross salary of more than $82,000 for only 180 days of work. The average annual income in Illinois is $50,800.

Watch the Stephenson County Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) NIDA (Northwest Illinois Development Alliance), NHS (Neighborhood Housing Service), and Prospering Together. Follow the money; see how few of the employees get the bulk of the bounty. Then, watch who gets the rent, the printing, and other amenities. Notice who their supporters are. Granted, there are many Prospering Together volunteers who get no trickle down. Good for them! Prospering Together said they would not ask for any tax dollars. I have a document that proves otherwise. (Call me.)

What is happening is what worried our founders: Destruction of our U.S. republic — with socialism taking control and stealing our individual freedoms. “We have given you a Republic … if you can keep it!” challenged Benjamin Franklin.

Well, now there are so many government employees that they are on the verge of controlling the vote. When that happens, we will become like Greece with violent public employees marching in the streets because the taxpayers have no more to give.

Stephenson County Tea Party will meet April 12, 6:30 p.m. at Dietz’s Old School Apartments in Lena. E-mail stepcoteapart@aeroinc.net or phone Bill Dietz at (815) 369-4334.

Spring has come early this year. People are out enjoying the unseasonably warm weather, including motorcycle riders. While most riders are considerate of others, a few insist on ridiculously loud exhaust pipes that can be heard from a mile away. I don’t know what reaction these folks are going for, maybe “Look at me, I’m cool.” Trust me, most people’s reaction is more like, “Wow, that’s obnoxious.” Some people say loud pipes save lives, but the people with the loudest bikes are rarely wearing helmets, so I doubt safety is a primary concern. I like the sound of a hog as long as it’s not splitting my eardrums, and I’m all for personal freedoms as long as you’re not negatively affecting others. If you interrupt my conversation within 100 yards, you are negatively affecting others. I like going for walks in the local parks such as Castle Rock, Mississippi Palisades and Starved Rock. It is impossible to enjoy these walks when it sounds like you are trackside at a NASCAR race. I assume people ride through the parks to enjoy nature. How you can enjoy nature riding a machine that’s louder than a wood chipper is a mystery to me. On top of that, you are ruining it for everyone else. Loud pipes weren’t an issue 15 years ago, when it was only a couple dozen rebels out on the weekend. Now that the Harley “lifestyle” is the newest fad, and there are literally thousands of bandwagon jumpers out every weekend, noise has become a serious problem. To those considerate bikers, I wish you a safe and fun summer. To those with loud pipes, I hope you can pull your head out of your tailpipe and consider that not everyone wants to hear you coming from a mile away.

March has been filled with beautiful weather and wonderful music, and the Mendelssohn Club is looking forward to even more of both in April! We’re so excited to bring you the world premiere of Donald Fraser’s new choral/orchestral song cycle, “Songs of the World,” on April 27. Our Mendelssohn Chorale, the Rock Valley Children’s Choir and Belvidere High School Choir have all begun rehearsing for this amazing concert, and our Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra will begin rehearsals next week. We hope you will join us for this world premiere performance — right here in Rockford!

We’ll be announcing our 2012-2013 Concert Season at “Songs of the World,” and season brochures will be available that evening. We’re also excited to introduce our new “FLEX” pass that will allow greater flexibility in your concert choices, as well as cost savings over the purchase of single tickets.

Ah, yes! Spring is spring, and along with spring comes garage sales; aren’t they fun? But, preparing for a sale is a lot of work. So why bother? Well, sometimes things are still nice and no longer useful to the seller, but still may be worthwhile to the buyer. Let’s face it, this is not the year 1930. Times have changed, and so has the cost of everything. So, if you find something you want and could use, and the price is reasonable, be fair and pony up. It’s already a bargain. If the seller didn’t feel these items might have value to someone else, there’s a garbage truck that goes by once a week.

Recently, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the University of Colorado’s campus gun ban violated the 2003 state law that entitles residents with permits to carry concealed weapons. According to conventional wisdom, advanced by our liberal friends, that will inevitably result in increased violence there.

Let’s take a look at the facts, rather than the liberal projections. The University of Colorado spent much of the past decade resisting the law. As a result, crime there has risen 35 percent since 2004. During the same period, Colorado State University adhered to the law, and saw a 60 percent drop in crime.

In 2008, the Supreme Court struck down the longstanding gun ban in Washington, D.C. The city’s mayor predicted that “More handguns will lead to more handgun violence.” More inconvenient facts: murders there numbered 186 in 2008, 144 in 2009, 132 in 2010, and 108 in 2011. Some increase, huh?

Which should we believe, liberal hysteria, or historical facts? Hmm, tough choice. Perhaps some day, liberals will figure out that gun bans only create protection-free zones. If someone might be carrying a gun, a villain is much more hesitant to attack them. If he does attack someone, he is more easily stopped. As the old saying goes, “When seconds count, the cops are only minutes away.”

I have just ended a three-year campaign in an effort to serve as Illinois Senator for the 34th District. In that time, I have forged many new and meaningful relationships and saw firsthand the enormous need in my community. I am extremely disappointed that I won’t be able to address those needs as a State Senator; however, I will contribute as a volunteer/organizer to the betterment of this community, as I always have.

There are many people who I am grateful to for their constant support: my committee, volunteers, contributors and supporters in many capacities. Also, my husband, Eric Wilson, news anchor at WREX-TV, whose professionalism was beyond reproach. He never compromised his integrity in the most trying of circumstances. And, my beautiful, smart and versatile daughter, Alison. Watching a 10-year-old put in so much time and effort into this very adult venture to show support for her mother was the greatest gift. She will grow to be a strong, confident woman.

And, if I would have told my brother and campaign manager, Mike Lantz, three years ago he would be scheduling interviews, giving introduction speeches and counting ballots on election night, he would have laughed. But he did those things, plus provided encouragement and testified to my intentions as only someone who has known and loved you all your life can. Thank you to him and the terrific kids he raised.

To all the other candidates who lost in the primary election: Running for public office opens candidates up to being criticized by strangers, false accusations from other candidates and their supporters and doubts about who you can trust. These negative circumstances are only tolerable because there is the hope to be able to make a positive difference. To return our government back to the people, for the people.

But, remember this, only a handful of people are brave enough to take a stand. Losing the popular vote isn’t a reflection of the quality of our character. Politics is a race that only one candidate moves forward in a primary and by no means defines the others as losers. In this case, the definition of losing would be to give up on serving our community.

Let’s keep moving forward in a positive direction. It is times like these that make us who we are.

This year we will witness a very negative presidential campaign. Barack Obama’s dismal record requires that he rely on distortions and outright lies to convince voters that he has accomplished something. Most of his first term was spent campaigning for a second term. He has deferred major decisions until after the election.

Obama assumes no responsibility. He spent two years blaming President George W. Bush for every problem. He pushed through an ill-conceived health care plan behind closed doors with zero Republican input. Now, he complains that Congress is not bi-partisan. He blames the high gas prices on the Middle East turmoil, which he has done nothing to resolve, and has chosen election politics over the national interest by rejecting the Keystone pipeline.

He told us his health care bill would cost $860 billion. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it will cost $1.76 trillion. This bill was structured to hide most of the expense until after the election.

He will craft a very persuasive argument to convince us he has accomplished something worthwhile. Only a well-informed electorate can prevent the unbelievable devastation he will cause when he isn’t plagued with the need to run for a second term.

I want to thank Rotary Club of Galena for the Jo Daviess County Roundtable meeting on March 21, 2012. This was an extremely well-presented event. Water hydrology, quality and quantity, aquifers, pollution sources, climate change, strategies and enforcement of laws and regulations were some of the topics.

These topics have redefined my life these last four years.

Credible speakers warning us that our water supplies are deteriorating, water rates will continue to rise, conserve by reusing gray water, and even if you are living in a municipality — prepare to invest in reverse osmosis instead of marble countertops.

It’s a better use of your money.

This came from Laura Curvey from the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory. This woman’s words were worth the price of the registration fee. I would pay it again just to listen to her. She gave advice based on her experience living in Third World countries whose water supplies were damaged or non-existent.

I respect a woman who found a way to live on 2 gallons of water a day with her conservation habits. If she could do it, so can we. Right?

Then, speaker Denton Brown appeared to be concerned about the water, but for different reasons. He wanted everyone to be educated about how to deal with polluted water or less water so there would be enough for the big industries to locate here because other areas in our country are running out of water.

It was a swell day.

Rockford has become a terrible, ugly, violent place to live. Money magazine reports on it, and Yahoo has ranked Rockford, rightfully so, as one of the most violent cities in the United States. Instead of doing something about it, Morrissey spends his time complaining about it.

The current administration and its propaganda-spewing daily newspaper known as the Register Star should admit the truth to the people of the city, and really, truly try to make something positive of the mess that Rockford has become.

Historic and blatant racism in the employment and educational sector, urban blight, open-air drug markets, criminal gun violence, police gun violence, biased media coverage, apathetic political administration, apathetic desensitized populace, unemployment, fear, terrible streets, and a growing distrust of each other are the biggest problems Rockford faces.

I grew up in Rockford, won a state title in football for my city, worked for a military contractor for four years before I even graduated high school. I joined the military to protect Rockford. But I was never shot at in the Army. That didn’t happen until someone shot up my house from right outside my window, trying to kill me almost a year ago in Rockford.

I’m sure your quest to return country forest preserves to a prairie state is well intentioned, but the brain trust that decided to “clear this path” has apparently chosen to overlook the unintended consequences of this endeavor and consider the will of the people before embarking on a heavy-handed, narrow-minded crusade.

Know that your vision to return these public properties to what is apparently your personal vision for retrogressive progress is not shared by persons with an understanding of nature at least equal to yours.

Before people vote for president in November, they should recall President Obama yucking it up with his cohorts about there weren’t as many shovel-ready jobs as they thought in the stimulus bill. Wasn’t that what he promised before this bill was passed — more shovel-ready jobs? What a joke on the American people! It’s easy not to laugh.

Obama also promised five days for Congress to consider bills, and on one or both of his more than 2,000-page bills were given only overnight to be voted on by Congress. Another of his many broken promises! As it has turned out, there was much to be glossed over in both the stimulus bill (a slush fund for Obama?) and Obamacare. Especially for seniors in the latter, since $500 billion is to be deducted from health care providers when at the current rates, some providers are not taking new Medicare patients.

A lot of people in this country seem to live in a bubble. What I mean by this is, facts don’t get in. A recent example of this is the Keystone pipeline. What most people don’t know, and the media are not reporting, is that there is an existing 1,853-mile, 30-inch pipeline (Phase 1) that has been operating since 2010. This pipeline is from Hardesty, Alberta, Canada to Steele City, Neb., with a branch to Wood River and Patoka (southern) Illinois. Phase 2 was completed in 2011 from Steele City, Neb., to Cushing, Okla. Phase 3 is in progress to complete the pipeline to Houston. The current uproar concerns Phase 4, which is a 1,179-mile separate, 36-inch pipeline from Canada to Steele City, Neb., cutting across Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska. This pipeline (Phase 4) is not really needed and has the potential to cause pollution problems in sensitive areas. The existing Keystone pipeline has more than 30 reported spills so far, including one in North Dakota that spilled 21,000 gallons and shot 60 feet in the air. This “Tar Sand” oil is thick stuff that has to be diluted with chemicals and pressurized just to make it through the pipes. When this oil reaches the Gulf, a lot of it will probably be refined and exported, not helping lower the price of diesel and gas here. The long-term environmental consequences of “Tar Sand” oil and domestic oil and gas “fracking” are just not worth the short-term benefit. I would recommend people watch the movie Gasland and become informed about what’s really going on with domestic oil and gas production. The information is out there; you just have to look outside the bubble.

The movie was shown on the evening of Feb. 15. It was announced by Rockford Urban Ministries, and several organic gardeners were present. Their initial conversation included statements that there were only three seed companies from which to purchase farm seeds. This is simply untrue!

The movie showed mostly animal agriculture and the processing of meat. It showed some large confinement farming cases in which the animals were crowded, some died, and it showed some mass slaughter facilities. It falsely led one to think that they are all that way. Then, it showed an open-air organic farm chicken processing facility. That facility had the most depressing part of the movie where live chickens were put in a large funnel, their throats cut, and they were left there to bleed to death. When we raised livestock, we always respected the animals as we respected the land, the environment and those who would use our products. A poultry slaughtering facility killed the geese by bleeding to death as in the above organic facility. We put an immediate stop to that, requiring that the animals be killed by severing the neck. They said, “Government inspectors require that the heads be left on.” We defied the cruel government regulation to reduce cruelty. My parents and I always honored the compassionate teachings of Buddha, and we treated all living things accordingly.

Corn-fed beef is bad as compared to grass-fed beef is another part of the agenda in this movie. However, grass-fed beef cannot produce the prime and choice quality steaks many people prefer as corn-fed beef can. This fact was conveniently omitted in the movie.

The movie also showed some grain farming in which they stressed the use of Monsanto’s patented GMO (gene-modified organism) seed. Those who use the patented seed without paying for it are prosecuted per U.S. patent law. Monsanto does donate the proceeds from these cases to charity. The movie did not even mention that other non-GMO and non-patented seeds are available from Monsanto and from many other seed companies. It also failed to mention the tremendous saving in fuel, soil erosion, water loss and less impact on the environment the GMO seeds, chemicals and no-till farming make possible. After the movie, I talked to others, and most understood from the movie that Monsanto patented GMO seeds were the only farm seeds available. The movie didn’t actually say that, but it was inferred by omission, which is, obviously, the intent of the movie. The acoustics of the room make it difficult to understand spoken words, so some misunderstanding was possible.

In summary, the agenda of this movie, Food, Inc. is to mislead by deception and omission to promote the small, organic versus the larger, more efficient farms and processors.

I am Ed Schott, Rockford, Ill., engineer and owner and operator of our western Illinois farm, which our ancestors purchased in 1832. I have three patents, and I am keenly aware of patent law and the purpose it has in stimulating ingenuity.

I want to personally thank the GOP Chairman, John McGlasson, of Livingston County, for having the class to invite both sitting congressmen to speak at their Lincoln Day dinner. It is an insult to a sitting congressman that some other counties within the 16th Congressional District would hold a dinner to celebrate the Lincoln legacy only to tarnish it by not asking Congressman Don Manzullo to speak. It is because of these kinds of tactics that the people are speaking out against the Illinois GOP.

When a party looks out for its own best interest instead of the people, it will not survive. The GOP should be the PEOPLE. Instead, it is looking out for itself. I hear it time and time again when I go out and KNOCK on doors. Because YOU do not reach OUT to the people, they fail to come to the polls. It is because they feel they are NOT being listened to. They are responding to the fact that many in the GOP in the 16th C.D. are slighting a congressman that the Illinois GOP doesn’t want. The message YOU, the Illinois GOP sends, is that only YOUR voice matters. The people are organizing, and they HAVE a voice. DO NOT fail to hear it. They ARE watching the votes. They are NOW an informed electorate. The sleeping giant is awake and on the move.

At Tea Party meetings all over the state, MANY come together on a monthly basis. They also communicate daily via social media to share what they know. They have been given a voice and tools in which to learn and to speak out. They go to local GOP meetings and see the poor turnout in relationship to the voters. They only see the inside party people. Your platform is good, your messaging is poor. Take the time to REALLY knock on doors; you would be SURPRISED what you may hear about the GOP and what needs to change!!!

“The whole state must be so well organized that every Whig can be brought to the polls. So divide the county into small districts and appoint in each a committee. Make a perfect list of the voters and ascertain with certainty for whom they will vote… Keep a constant watch on the doubtful voters and have them talked to by those in whom they have the most confidence… On Election Day, see that every Whig is brought to the polls.” — Abraham Lincoln, Letter to a friend, 1840

On behalf of On the Waterfront’s extended family, I would like to acknowledge and support Becky Genoways’ efforts and leadership in the field of raising monies for not-for-profit entities in Rockford and the surrounding communities.

Becky and her team, both staff and volunteers, demonstrate superior expertise in the field of producing a fund-raiser by continually demonstrating professionalism and determination. They are creative, upbeat, compassionate, and open-minded individuals who, by the very nature of their business, must constantly adapt and overcome whatever challenges are thrown their way. Peers and other community leaders are impressed by Becky’s ability to exceed expectations through utilizing a team approach. The On the Waterfront team has a “can do attitude,” everyone frequently jumps in and does what he/she needs to do to get the job done.

Becky’s leadership skills are most aptly demonstrated by her success in bringing together a diverse group of individuals and instilling in each of them the need to provide the best experience for every patron at On the Waterfront. She is an excellent leader who consistently demonstrates by ensuring that all not-for-profit entities have the potential to raise funds to acquire what they need.

I cannot express enough the disappointment I felt at reading about the RAVE wanting to charge On the Waterfront for the use of Davis Park, and having RAVE in charge of the concessions. You have, in effect, just killed all hope for more than 100 nonprofits of their dreams. On the Waterfront is the largest tourist attraction the Rockford area has, but that is because of the need to raise funds for nonprofits. This Labor Day festival is about helping those in need, not making money. Becky and her staff and the thousands of volunteers have never, will never, and could never make this festival about making a buck. Yes, money must be made to continue having the festival, but a profit? No. On the Waterfront is a nonprofit, and how dare RAVE attempt to extort fees and control? It makes me ashamed of Rockford.

On the Waterfront, Becky, Nina and all the volunteers should be commended for their never-ending devotion to their work and their community. I sincerely encourage RAVE to reverse their position and help this community, not further injure it.

What is a Court-Appointed Special Advocate?

Aside from being a board member of our 15th Judicial Circuit CASA program, I am also director of Court Services for Ogle County Probation. In that capacity, I am present in court for various types of court hearings. When an abuse and neglect case is before our juvenile judge, it always amazes me how complicated these cases can be. In the middle of these “legal hurricanes” are the CASA volunteers. But what does it really mean to the children to have a CASA volunteer? Here are some of their words.

Jackie states about her volunteer: “Lisa changed my life. The difference between Lisa and everyone else in the system was that Lisa was really interested in who I was.” Laura states about her volunteer: “Throughout all the changes and different people I had to deal with, Sally was the one person who was there just for me. Knowing that Sally cared about me meant the world to me. She was the anchor I desperately needed to stay in school.” Melissa states about her volunteer: “The only one we could turn to for answers was our CASA volunteer. She tried to comfort us and guide us through the process. She was a constant in our lives and our voice in the courtroom.”

So, how did these kids turn out? One is a lawyer and prosecutor, one is a Marine veteran and a civilian police officer, and one is attending college and hopes to go to medical school. Soon, we will be doing another volunteer training for new advocates. GET INVOLVED. These stories are not unique. You, too, can make a difference in a child’s life. For more information about becoming an advocate, contact our office at (815) 288-1901.

The Rockford Public School District is taking steps in the right direction as they discuss the possibility of expanding the Gifted Program. The nature of our economy is changing, and we as a community must also change if we hope to continue to compete in the future. There is an increasing need locally for college-educated workers, particularly in fields such as engineering. It is critical that we continue to evolve our school system to anticipate and support the needs of businesses already in our community, as well as those that we might yet entice to come to Rockford.

Over the past few years, the Gifted Program has consistently had more students qualify for the program than there were spots available. It is time for us to expand the program and ensure that every student who qualifies is able to take part in this outstanding program that continues to produce student achievement that is recognized as among the top in the state.

The administrators at RPS 205, in the preliminary planning for a Gifted Program expansion, have outlined a controlled growth model utilizing existing and available district resources. The suggested use of the former Kennedy Middle School on Rockton Avenue to house grades 6-8 of the Gifted Program for next year must happen to allow more qualified first through eighth graders into the Gifted Program.

Please join me in letting our school board and district administrators know that we support the ongoing plans to expand these critical programs. Continue to support our children and the improved access to these programs that would be provided under the expansion plans.

As a citizen, I was appalled by the total lack of respect the hosts of the recent Post Office town hall had for the intelligence of the citizens of our community. As a candidate for county board, I am mad as hell. The presentation given whitewashed the reality as to what ails our great American institution. That reality is H.R. 6407: “The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act” of 2006. This “bill” was passed during a lame-duck session and by voice vote, not by roll call, so the politicians get political cover as a result. H.R. 6407 forces the Post Office to prepay their retirement fund 75 years into the future in 10 years at about $5.5 billion a year. No other government agency or private company is mandated to do this. Why the Post Office? My guess is the greedy vultures that claim government is forever bad, would love to privatize the Post Office. One speaker mentioned she sent out $30 in Christmas cards via the USPS this year, and if she had sent them via UPS or FedEx, it would have cost her about $8 per card. Call Congress and the president and demand the passing of H.R. 1351 and S. 1688.

Utilizing authority granted to it in President Obama’s health care law, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that in one year, almost all employers, including religiously affiliated employers, will be forced to offer their employees health insurance that covers sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those so-called “preventive services” in the health policies they write, and almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the federal government’s current administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to many people of faith the right of religious liberty. The rule especially targets the Catholic Church, which is the largest institutional church in the nation and clearly opposes abortion and contraception. By this rule, the government will attempt to compel Catholic institutions to either violate their own teaching, or to drop health coverage for their employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so).

The Bishops have made it clear: the Catholic Church cannot and will not comply with this unjust law. Regardless of how you feel about the church’s teaching on abortion and contraception, you must respect the right of religious institutions and free citizens of faith to hold to those teachings and not be compelled by government order to violate them. This is a matter of grave concern, touching on the very foundations of liberty, and we ask your help.

We ask all people of faith and good will to actively support and do all you can to advance the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act. The act has been introduced in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate as H.R.1179 and S.1467. And as the Catholic Church and many other people of faith move forward, exploring all opportunities for overturning this unjust government mandate, we ask you to lend your prayers, your voice and your support to this profoundly important cause.

My wife was driving my daughter home from school when part of the inside of the car burst into flames. Luckily, it was the back seat, and they were sitting in the front.

The mechanic found the problem was the rear defogger/antenna module, which is housed behind a plastic panel by the rear passenger seat. The wires are not secured, and the mechanic thinks the seat belt may have, over time, rubbed the insulation off, causing a short. This module does not have a fuse, so there was nothing to stop it from overheating and burning. When my mechanic was looking for a replacement panel at a local junk yard, he found, in every Alero he looked in, the wires on this module were at least partially melted.

After some research, I also found other Alero owners who have had the same issue. This appears to be a problem with Aleros from 1999 on.

If you own an Alero and start to smell something you think may be melting plastic, check on it right away!

Dear ICCAW members:

Please help us get the word out! In an effort to draw public attention to what’s taking place locally with the Triumph meat packing plant proposal, we are encouraging as many people as possible to submit letters to editors and op-eds to local, regional and statewide papers.

The East Moline City Council is considering spending $10,000 in citizen taxpayer dollars to hire a Chicago law firm to assist in negotiating a Redevelopment Agreement and financial incentive package for the Triumph Foods meat packing plant. This will occur at one or both of their upcoming City Council meetings on Feb. 6 and Feb. 21. The misguided idea of wasting taxpayer dollars to hire the firm is a move that could put Triumph back on the tracks. We feel the timing is crucial for the city to make the right decision and walk away from the deal before it becomes a runaway train.

In addition, the Illinois State Water Survey recently released a draft FEMA map that places the Triumph Foods site in a floodway. While the draft map has validated what local area residents have been saying for years about the location being unsuitable for development, the city appears to remain undeterred.
