ROCKTON – The Hononegah Indians squeaked by Buffalo Grove 21-20 in the first round of the IHSA Class 7A high school football playoffs here Friday.

The final plays came with 2:30 remaining as the Bison, trailing 21-14, converted a fourth-and-11 from the Hononegah 15-yard line to come within a point. Instead of kicking the PAT for the tie, Buffalo Grove attempted a two-point conversion. Hononegah’s Zach Hale wasn’t biting, however, and knocked away the likely game-winning pass in the end zone.

Buffalo Grove attempted an onside kick but the Indians recovered and sealed the contest with two first downs.

Hononegah will face Wheaton Warrenville South (9-1) in the second round. Wheaten Warrenville topped Belleville West 20-12 Friday.

In other action Friday, East fell to Chicago Simeon 46-0 in a Class 7A contest. In Class 6A, Lakes defeated Belvidere North 35-17.

Class 7A Harlem fell to Lincoln-Way West 24-17 Saturday.

Boylan rolled over Glenbard South 42-0 Saturday to advance in Class 5A. The Titans face Wheaton St. Francis next week in Rockford.

Rockford Christian fell to Sterling Newman 54-14 in a Class 2A to finish the season 6-4. R.
