High School Football Playoff Round 2: Hononegah falls, Boylan stays alive

ROCKTON – The dream of winning a state championship was dashed for previously unbeaten Hononegah as the Indians were shocked by Wheaton Warrenville South 20-17 in the second round of the IHSA Class 7A football playoffs here Saturday.

Down 14-3 in the third, Wheaton Warrenville South orchestrated scoring drives that hushed the large crowd expecting to see Hononegah advance. After the Indians took the 11-point lead, Wheaton Warrenville South quarterback Noah Henkel broke free for a 34-yard run to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Jake Arthus to make it 14-10.

The Tigers stopped Hononegah’s next drive and got the ball back on their 20-yard-line. On the first play, Henkel escaped a sack before connecting with Jason Haw on a cross-field pass. The 80-yard touchdown put South up 17-14 with 10 minutes left in the game.

Hononegah had a chance to roar back but a fumble fell into the arms of the Tigers and they returned it to the 2-yard-line. A field goal made it 20-17.

The Indians moved the ball to the WWS 34 with 2 minutes to go but lost the ball on downs to end the game.

Wheaton Warrenville South (10-1) faces St. Charles North (8-3) Saturday in the quarterfinals.

In Class 5A action Saturday, the Boylan Titans stayed alive in the IHSA tournament by downing Wheaton St. Francis 34-21. Boylan (10-1) faces Sterling (10-1) next week at Sterling High School. R.
