CHAMPAIGN – The Forreston Cardinals made quick work of Camp Point Central by running away with the IHSA Class 1A football championship 44-6 Friday.

It is Forreston’s third state title in five years. The Cardinals also won in 2014 and 2016.

This year’s team finished the regular season 7-2, losing to Lena-Winslow in Week 2 and dropping their Week 4 contest to Pearl City-Eastland. They spilled Hiawatha, Milledgeville and Dakota in the first three rounds of the playoffs to set up a rematch with Lena-Winslow. Forreston emerged with the 34-28 victory to punch their ticket to Friday’s championship.

There now have been 20 state championship teams from the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference (NUIC). R.

The Rock River Times will have more on this story.
