High School Basketball: East pulls away from Jefferson; Auburn tops Hononegah

Staff Report

ROCKFORD – Chris Burnell steadied the East E-Rabs early and then delivered late as they pulled away for a 68-47 win at Jefferson Friday.

The J-Hawks jumped out to a 9-2 lead and worked to keep East shooting guard Sincere Parker under wraps. Jefferson concentrated on Parker, who scored 115 points in four games in last week’s 205 Tip-Off Classic, holding him to three points in the first half. Burnell, though, exploded for 18 points, powering the E-Rabs to a 33-22 halftime lead.

Burnell went back to distributing the ball in the third quarter, but when Jefferson cut the lead to 47-38 on a 3-pointer by George Williams, the senior guard poured in eight more points to help East pull away.

Clanton finished with 28 points, Sha’den Clanton added 14 and Parker scored 10.

Sophomore Latrell Graham led Jefferson with 17 points and Williams added 11.

The East-Jefferson battle was just one of the highlights of the night.

In other action, Auburn evened its NIC-10 record at 1-1 by knocking off Hononegah, 63-53. Auburn’s signature pressure defense caused the Indians to go 13 straight possessions without scoring as the Knights built a 20-7 lead they would never relinquish.

Justin Blake led Auburn with 16 points, Markus Burd added 14 and Joshua Ausler chipped in 13.

Guilford also improved to 1-1 by beating Belvidere North, 56-42. R.
