Police ask for public’s help identifying Rockford burglary suspect

Staff Report

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Police Department is asking the public for help identifying a man they say burglarized a local used car lot Friday on the city’s near-east side.

At around 10 a.m., officers responded to a burglar alarm at Auto Works, 213 S. Sixth St., and discovered the glass entry door was broken and several vehicles in the lot were damaged.

Police say the suspect removed cash from inside business and attempted to steal a silver van. In the process, he crashed the van into three other vehicles before getting it stuck on a concrete median. He then fled on foot.

Surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect. He’s described as a black man in his late 20s or early 30s. He’s approximately 6 feet tall with short hair and was wearing a gray hoodie with red lettering, black stocking cap, blue jeans and white athletic shoes.

Anyone with information is urged to call Rockford Police at 815-966-2900 or leave an anonymous tip with Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
