Suspect in Rockford homicide found dead in Mexico

Staff Report

A Rockford man wanted in connection with a nearly 10-year-old murder case has been found dead in Mexico.

Police say Alfonso Salgado Jr. was killed Dec. 3 in Puebla, Mexico. He was wanted in the 2010 killing of 23-year-old Steven Miller.

On Sept. 10, 2010 shortly after 5:30 p.m., Rockford officers responded to the 600 block of Morgan Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located Miller suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Miller was pronounced dead at local hospital.

Detectives from the Rockford’s Violent Crimes and Gang units conducted a follow-up investigation and developed Salgado and 18-year-old Alex Salgado, 21, as suspects. The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and authorized first-degree murder charges against both men.

Alex Salgado was taken into custody Sept. 11, 2010. Investigative information revealed that Alfonso Salgado Jr. had fled the country. Alex Salgado was found not guilty in 2012.
