Crews battle large fire at Chicago-area recycling facility

DES PLAINES — Crews worked through the night to extinguish large fire at a recycling facility in suburban Chicago.

No injuries were reported following the fire that started late Wednesday in Des Plaines. Deputy Chief Peter Dyer of the Des Plaines Fire Department tells the Chicago Sun-Times that crews found flames coming out of the roof of the facility and the fire quickly spread.

WLS-TV reports there were explosions at the Maine Scrap Metal facility as the fire burned and chemicals inside the building fed the fire. Additional crews from at least five nearby departments ended up responding to help fight the fire early Thursday.

The fire was mostly extinguished on Thursday morning, but Dyer says at least half of the facility was destroyed. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
