Flood warnings on Rock, Pec Rivers; fire risk elevated Friday

ROCKFORD — Flood warnings have been issued on sections of the Rock and Pecatonica rivers, Friday, and officials are warning of an elevated fire risk due to high winds.

The Rock River has been placed under a Flood Warning near Como, just southwest of Sterling-Rock Falls. Minor flooding was reported as the river peaked at around 12.5 feet, Friday morning. Flood stage in the area is 10 feet.

The Pecatonica River near Shirland has been upgraded to a Flood Warning from an earlier advisory due to ice jams. Water levels were not available, but the National Weather Service has advised that localized flooding is likely in the area as broken ice coverage continues to move down river.

Ice jams will remain a concern for localized flooding through next week.

And high winds forecasted for Friday afternoon will create a limited fire risk, NWS said. Dry air and ground conditions coupled with wind gusts of up to 45 mph could lead to fire concerns throughout northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
